I wish I could help you, but can't. I have had this conversation with a couple on here and there will always be someone who claims to be an expert, who says that it isn't slanted and is exactly the same as all the others from that year. You and I know it's crooked, but how it got that way is a mystery.

I have a theory on how it happens though. Maybe I'll prove it someday.

I'm not sure when hand punching mint marks ceased but I found a whole roll of B.U. 1977D cents that all had tilted mint marks.

1989 was the last year they did hand punched mint marks.

Chris recently informed me of that. That is the only reason I knew that. Lol, but thanks for credit!

Ok, this is really perplexing. I can't find any information on tilted numbers, just tilted mint marks.

It doesn't take much to move metal around on the Lincoln cent. From the photo, it looks like the top of the "75" was contacted by something. What it was, I don't know. I do know that a $50 Mint bag is heavy enough that the rest of the coins in the bag would be sufficient weight to cause this if the coin was near the bottom of the bag and someone (casually) dropped it to the floor.

One thing is sure. If this was actually a die with a badly placed date, then there would have to be tens of thousands more just like it. So, you have to ask yourself, "Why haven't any more surfaced in the last 40 years?"

Usually, the simplest answer is the best.

They're kind of like that to begin with, Sheila, I just Googled some images. I think the hit the 75 took on the top accentuates the tilt a little like an optical illusion. Lol, but I think that about sums this one up. Hey, it had me going, I had to look up the images. :D

Yes, I can't imagine it's just one of a few.

It's hard for me to see how the whole digit could be moved by a hit. It's an interesting piece to me.

But you're learning, which is why you were able to answer.

I'm not going to give this one away just yet.... but here is a clue.

Look at the rim on the right side near the date.

On the coin, it almost looks like it was slightly folded over. It looks like a crack, like splitting. I don't know what that means though. I'm not that experienced. I'm still learning,

OK, I'm curious. What is it? I can't figure it out.

I looked at twenty or so random images of 1975 Cents via Google. Half of them had the 5 tilted.

Pro tip, Sheila: I don't care if I already know the answer, I Google everything before I post here. Whatever it is, chances are someone has seen it or done it before, and once you develop the skills to tell the wheat from the chaff (there's as much BS on Google as fact), you're well set to ask far fewer questions. :)

I also have a 1975 d tilted 5. Do I need to keep it or spend it. Wait it's a 70's year. I save all 79 and older years regardless, just because I have a thing for old school stuff that you don't/won't see anymore!!!!
