I was watching it live when it sold. It was quite an amusing auction. The auctioneer was egging them on, I think he was surprised at how high it went as well. When he opened it at $11k, it quickly went up to $20k. Then there were two bidders who went at it. They took a little time to think about it before each bid, it was a really slow auction. I'm guessing they weren't normal coin collectors. That thing sold for about 40k times what it is worth...
I think I should go buy a 500 count box of nails and see if I could strike a deal with PCGS to get 'em graded. Sorta like the 500 coin ASE monster boxes. I wonder how many MS69's and MS70's I'd get? Edit: I think I posted something like this in the other $10,000 Nail thread, but I couldn't resist bringing up my super lucrative plan again. lol
Well, sixpenny (2") nails come about 215 per pound, and a pound box is about $3.50. So about 1.62 cents per at retail.
Huh? Fred is one of the Largest Mint Error Dealers (Exclusively Mint Error's) in the Country. As such, he's usually the 1st point of contact for folks with Mint Error coins for sale. And I think the term "thousands" is a bit far fetched.
