So, here's the coin in question: an 1879 Italian 5 Lire. I got this coin as a new year's gift from my brother's girlfriend and I'd like an idea on it's value. It's a cool coin indeed, even if it's worth nothing over it's silver value.
A lot of money! http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/221961811754?item=221961811754&lgeo=1&vectorid=229466&rmvSB=true
Well, it is rather battered, but you should be able to find a few similar sold examples on ebay. A rough grade would be VF. I advise checking sold listings only. Unsold are just wishful sellers till a buyer comes along.
It's a nice piece of history, but in this condition its value is rather low. Specs: http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces13537.html
