When I was actively collecting I bought many beautiful toners, Morgans as well as Washies, all slabbed before the glut of AT stuff started showing up. I am considering selling some off but have not followed the market for a few years and I'm wondering if the multiple premiums are still being paid. Many of my coins have real WOW status so I need to know the reality before I start the process of liquidation. Thanks
Yea, but I really don't have the energy to try and sell a hundred coins on Ebay individually, I was hoping a coin store or a table at the Tampa fun show would get me what I want in one fell swoop so I'm just curious if the big markups are still there or if it was just a fad. Remember when the "tarnished" GSA coins were discounted?
Personally, I don't think a dealer at a B&M or even the Fun Show will pay you close to what they are worth. If you want to get an idea of what they might sell for, check out Shane Canup's site on eBay.......Kryptonitecomics. He sells a lot of toners for clients. Chris
Wonder if Shane would consign them? Slabbed toners, to me, ought to be on Heritage or Great Collections, except Shane's business because he has the clientele.
I think toned Morgans do better on E-Bay than Heritage. Heck, you could consign them to me if you want. I have very good photographic and cataloging skills and have ample experience selling on E-Bay. PM me if interested. Paul
When the Sunnywood set was being assembled he was told he was nuts for paying such high premiums for his amazing cherrypicked monster morgans. He ended up selling the whole thing intact for a huge 7 figure sum and he laughed all the way to the bank
I can barely touch a good toner Morgan on ha. I've done well buying them other places tho. And I've bought some good ones at ha big sales but paid the price
While rainbow toning can and does occur naturally, I wouldn't be surprised if many of the so called rainbow Morgans were done artificially when the rainbow toning craze took off. I've been collecting since the mid-1990's, and back then the rage were shinny Morgans. It was not uncommon to go to coin shops and find lots of spotless Morgan Dollars. Toned Morgans, especially rainbow toned Morgans were few and far in between. All of the sudden Rainbow Morgans become the rage, and now it is not uncommon to go into a shop and find a few rainbow Morgans. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them went from shinny Morgan Dollars to rainbow Morgan Dollars in the last 20 years. If done well, they can even end up slabbed without any issues. I'm sure we all know of a few people here who put their Morgans on envelopes to "induce natural toning".
I might have interest in several of them if they are high end grade wise or if the color is truly extraordinary and monster or near monster. P.S. I also accept eBay consignments.
Inducing natural toning like envelopes is fine if the science backs it up. It's when you start trying to quickly add color using nefarious methods that is the big no-no by today's standards... "If the progression is correct, why suspect" http://www.jhonecash.com/coins/tonedmorgans.asp
Thanks Paul, I remember your Kennedy half, 64 I think, I have 2 that are very similar. I appreciate your offer to consign but Shane liver nearby me and I wont have to mail them, were in the 10-12k range for just the quarters.
So, a person could do better on selling the true rainbow toned Morgans, not necessary true monster toned, on the forums instead of the auction houses?
Probably not. Any of the auction houses reach an audience orders of magnitude larger than any online community.
