Silver Proof Set Mintages vs Market Value (1999-2013)

Here is the updated numbers on the silver proof sets. The 2012 set is still holding value but the other sets are heading lower probably with the lower price of silver.

Here's the latest update on the silver proof sets. The lower price of silver has impacted the price of many of the sets. The only exception seems to be the 2012 set, which continues to climb in value. The 2013 set is also seeing a positive move. I'm guessing the 2014 may also be a good value when it becomes unavailable from the mint. All three sets will have low mintages of about 400k.

Any idea WHY the 1999 sells for so much?

It sold out at the mint and created a major amount of demand for the next few years. At one point, it was selling for over $300. I bought mine in 2006 for $320. Over the past few years, it has steadily fallen back to earth and now often sells for less than $80. Based on the trends, I'm guessing that it'll continue to fall in value to a value close to the other sets.

Besides that, no one, not even the Mint, expected that the SQ program would attract 10 million new collectors to the hobby.

I may have already responded but the higher price on the 1999 is that, even though the "mintage" says 804,565, a good number of these were destroyed due to improper storage by the US Mint. The Statehood Quarters Silver Proofs were offered on multiple occasions as silver was still quite cheap and a lot of folks simply weren't in to paying $31.95 for a proof set. Silver or not.

Around 2002, I think, the US Mint had a dual offering on 1999 and 2000 Silver Proof Sets where under one product number, you could order a 1999 and a 2000 Silver Proof Set.

A lot were sold but a LOT were returned due to coins which had turned. Since the mint could no longer produce them, replacements weren't offered and I believe that a specific number of these sets were destroyed.

Keep in mind that, aside from the Silver Proof/Uncirculated BiCentennial Sets and the SBA's by the $2,000 bag, this was the first time that the US Mint actually offered proof sets during a year in which they had not been minted.

The 1999 Silver Proof Sets were NOT a sell out. Neither was the 2000 Silver Sets.

A new era had been entered where 5 quarters were included in each Proof and Uncirculated Set and the program simply was not that popular in the "Made for Collectors" coins arena. Only die hard proof set purchasers ended up with them.

It was not until some of those 1999 Silver Proof Quarters were selling for upwards of $17,000 in PR70DCAM that the market for the 1999 Sets really took off.

CU dumped their forums in 2002 and came up with a new forum that same year. Unfortunately, finding threads about the 1999 Silver Proof Sets is difficult.

How long has coin talk been around as I distinctly remember that the 1999 Silver Sets were offered after 1999. Of course, I could be confused as well.

Unless you sell them privately yourself, you will have a hard time selling them to dealers at any price. I have a small suitcase full, and no one at a major show I was at, wanted to even discuss a purchase. You may have to break them out and sell them as bullion.

 

And you can now buy a 1999 silver proof set for $80 on the bay. My $320 investment in one in 2006 is one of my best ever. It is almost as good as my decision to start purchasing silver when it went under $20 ounce.

 

I agree, and I also obtained these sets, at least, up to 2009.

 

Despite the drop in the silver market, many of the silver proof sets are retaining value or slightly increasing in value. It is quite baffling. The 2012 set continues to be the winner and the 2013 set is starting to creep in value. Hopefully, the 2014 and 2015 sets will follow a similar pattern. The 1999 set continues to hold at about $80.

As we close out 2016, I thought it was a good time to update the silver proof set mintages versus market values since 1992. Despite a slight increase in silver prices this year, I'm not seeing much effect on the value of the sets. They are doing much better than the clad sets; thanks to the intrinsic value. The 2012 set is holding value but I'm thinking that it won't last much longer. As soon as the mint stops selling the 2015 set, it will probably crash back to earth.

 

The crash of the 1999 silver proof set is the reason why I don't collect moderns anymore. I saved and was able to afford one at $350 when I was about 12 to complete my set and then the price crashed. Put a sour taste in my mouth for moderns. Too many people intentionally flipping and manipulating the moden market for me to care about putting together sets.
