I was wondering if anyone else saw anything notable about the 7 and 9 on this Barber Half I just purchased. To me, it looks like the 7 had some work done on the die and the 9 kind of looks like MD but I don't see anything on the 1 or 8. I'm not a Barber expert, so this could be perfectly normal, but it never hurts to ask. @cpm9ball and @Treashunt go ahead and do your worst, but if it's not an error, posting these kinds of question is the only way I'll learn!
This is actually listed in Kevin Flynn's book The Authoritative Reference on Barber Half Dollars as a RPD
And with a little more digging in David Lawrence's book, it looks like Breen also listed a repunched 97 for this date.
Do you think this matches what is listed? I haven't been able to find any online guide telling me about Barber Half Errors.
I'm fine if it's just some MD, I was just curious. Either way, I'm happy to have this coin as my newest addition to my US Type Set.
From what I can tell in the Flynn book, it's the same doubling. There is no picture listed in the Lawrence book.
Well thank you kindly Sir, I appreciate you looking those up for me. I am comfortable calling it an RPD and comfortable if others don't believe it to be. Either way, I think it's a keeper
Surely looks like a RPD. I threw out that that Authoritative book. But, Lawrence is excellent. Breen is fair.
Thank you everyone for your feedback. I sent a photo to the Barber Coin Collecting Society and they also confirmed they believe it to be a RPD. I'm doubtful I'll ever have it annotated on the coin since I don't intend to ever sell it and not even sure if the premium on the coin would make it worth it, but I'm happy to have a variety in my US Type Set. Thanks again!
