I just thought I would share my last coin purchase of 2015 and some additional context behind the purchase. Yes, it's yet another eastern denarius of Septimius Severus but coming from the rare sub-issue engine AVG II CO. Septimius Severus denarius Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG II CO, laureate head right Rev:– INVICTO IMP TROPAEA, Trophy with captured arms below Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 Reference:– BMCRE -. RIC -. RSC -. One other example known in Paris And to put in context here are the other coins that I have from the same obverse die.... BONAE SPEI (2 examples same die pair) BONI EVENTVC (sic) (2 examples same die pair) LEG VIII AVO (sic) ?CR P COS MINER VICT MONETAE AVG (2 different reverse dies) VICTOR IVST AVG
What is the known record for reverses used with the same obverse die? I believe there are at least a dozen used with the PEPT COSI Septimius die but I only have five of them. Martin, do you have any die with more than the ten?
I know of 12 reverse dies with the obverse posted above. I missed out on a different IVST die last week.
In asnwer to Doug's questionI have been researching these rare issues for some time. The British Museum only has two examples from this obverse die and thus with this obverse legend. I hope to build a website next year to catalog my eastern collection and try and cover as much detail as I can about these issues including a list of the examples that I am aware of. Here are the BM examples with the second coin being misattributed in their database :- © Trustees of the British Museum. © Trustees of the British Museum.
I have found another mis-attributed example in the BM collection. This is exciting to me as it is a reverse type I wasn't aware of with this obverse die. © Trustees of the British Museum.
And now as we get into 2016 I add another reverse die to the set. This reverse type not previously known for this obverse variation. Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SE-V PERT AVG II CO, laureate head right Rev:– FORTVNAE REDVCI, Fortuna (pax?), with modius on head, seated left holding branch and cornucopia Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 References:- RIC -. RSC -. BMCRE -. First example known.
Martin => you're like Sherlock Severus!! => congrats on another point in the endless game between Mentor and Martin!!
