In 2011, I bought a 1895-O Barber dime at an auction for $285 that included a 10% buyers fee and an 8% NY state tax. I didn't get a chance to look at the coin prior to the bidding but was thinking that it would probably make G-4 based on the other bids. I was sorely mistaken and must dig deep to rate it an AG-3. Lesson learned; never assume quality at a coin auction based on the herd. What do you think it is worth?

I think you did alright, the 95-O is pretty elusive. I'd call it a G-4 and put it in the $350-375 range, but you could get lucky and go a bit higher.

Do they grade the barber dimes differently than other ones. It looks too worn to grade as high as G-4 to me. The reverse is quite poor. I was almost thinking a 2.

I wouldn't say that they grade them differently, it's just the design that makes them look more worn than other coins of the same grade. It's pretty unusual to see a barber dime with most of the rims remaining graded below G-4. I wouldn't be shocked if it came back AG, but it would be unusual.

I was just looking at CoinFacts. They show a few graded G-4 by NGC and PCGS with the same look to the rims. You paid a bit too much but you own a tough coin in any grade. If not for the taxes and fees, the price was about right. I like the looks of the coin.

Overall detail looks like a Good though that uneven reverse rim wear is a bit much IMHO. I don't think the price you paid was really out of line. Looks original and a good date to have...

Your dime looks less worn than the AG03 example on PCGS's Photograde app. Since it's a rare date, that would increase its chances of coming back as a G04 if you sent it in for grading.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I'd call it an AG-3, and say you paid right about retail price. It'll be hard to make a profit if you are looking to resell, but if you bought it for yourself then I would say you got an attractive coin with honest wear for a fair price.
