always wanted a velia nomos but they are kinda expansive for something of low priority. Then this one popped up. Worn, but well centered and nice portrait, figured I'd put in a bid, and whala...

Great-looking coin--I made a bid on it myself and it's kind of cool seeing it pop up here.. like running into someone you know when you're overseas.

My first ancient: Seller's attribution (I think the date must be wrong, since this is a posthumous issue and she died in 140AD. Since it was issued by Antoninus Pius, it must date from ~140-161AD.) AR Denarius, ca.138-9AD, ca.17mm, ca.2.8g. DIVA FAVSTINA, draped bust right / AVGV-STA, Ceres, veiled, standing left, holding torch & raising robe. RIC362, RSC104, BMC421 Also these:
Great choices! RIC dates this coin "After her death in AD 141." More recent scholarship puts it in October or November of 140. The coins are not dated - does anyone know how long the various DIVA types were produced? Did Pius issue them to the end of his reign in 161? Or do we have any way of knowing?
