It is possible to have a US coin thread that doesn't have arguments about grading?

Hmmmm - I can't speak for what goes on today because I don't post in the other forums or even read them anymore. But in the old days it wasn't even possible on the NGC and PGCS forums. Back then, the "old timers" or recognized authorities on the subject if you will, were trying to tell the "newcomers" why and how a given coin was over-graded. So all in all, I'd say it seems to pretty much be a constant.

But if you wanna just talk about coins, I LOVE to just talk about coins. But inevitably, somebody comes along and says, or asks, what's it grade ? Then everything just goes to ............

It's not only possible, it's easy. All you have to do is pretend that the people you're talking to can't see the expression on your face or your gestures, and don't use the same slang as they do where you live. Then, talk to them like you're both sitting at the same dinner table.

Simple. Except on the Internet, where people don't feel like they have to be as polite as they would be to some random stranger on the street.

After all, grading is subjective. By definition you can't be 100% right, so why you arguin'? :)

Seems to me that a large portion of US coin threads are guess the grade.

I find guess the grade to be a good exercise -- unless someone wants to vent their spleen. It's just coins!

It's how you learn to grade from images, just like how you learn to grade in-hand. You look at a hozillion of 'em. :)

In this day you really have to get good at grading from images I guess. I personally love the GTG threads. There will always be conflicting opinions, it shouldn't be a big deal.

I think it's entirely possible to have a discussion (not an argument) about a coin's grade, as long as people don't (1) assume they know what the other person is thinking and (2) don't read emotion into a text post.

LOL - the answer is not really.:) Of course it would help if people stopped asking for grades and opinions - but this is kind of what this forum is about. It seems some people get offended when you give your opinion(good or bad). Eventually it comes down to grading and what people like or dislike. Personally some of the toners posted are not my cup of tea so I would not buy one - but that does not mean all of them. :)

My biggest issues are the 'attacks' launched by individuals. ..does not seem like a joyful hobby to me when a putdown has to be used by somebody...

Perhaps this is a rhetorical question, but it is possible to have a good, solid thread where we stick to the subject matter? Although it's not an incredibly hostile issue, it's getting out of hand. Just wondering.

You're right. It's the "thread" and "tone" of the country leaking into CT.

Yes, I think it's possible. Probable? No.

If people could express their opinions civilly than I think it's possible. Also, it's sometimes difficult to judge the intent of the constructive criticism given during grading, thus leading to quick, harsh responses. Some people are also very direct in their approach, which is fine, but knowing the poster better would help.

Grading is definitely one of the foremost topics in numismatics. I think a good point to remember in a discussion is that we all like to be treated with respect. Taking time to reread and check the tone of what you have typed before you post is a good idea. My first effort tends to be blunt. I am in this hobby to enjoy it, I find it absorbing enough that it gives my mind a break from the other responsibilities and stresses of life. I'm all for learning, there are many knowledgeable people here that can share their knowledge. But a discussion can quickly spiral downward if people don't treat each other respectfully.

Nicely written. I'd also like to add "check your ego's at the door when entering a grading discussion".

    Ditto on that.

And Merry Christmas. No doubt in my mind we "all" have a major wish list we would love to have fulfilled this Christmas.
