hello all! i recently got this nice looking Indian head and i noticed it seems to have some doubling on the letters on the obverse and around liberty's image in general. also on the reverse there are some triangular looking impressions on the wreath that seem like "phantom" images because they are not bold but rather faint. plus there are a couple of lines in the obverse that might be die clashes? i am a collector but i am not too knowledgeable in errors and varieties. any inf would be welcome! thanks everyone.
Here's a link to a short piece on James Longacre and his doubling http://www.numissociety.com/content.php?135-Longacre-Doubling-A-discussion
Fun coin. Great example of Longacre doubling with clash marks on both sides and a crack as well. Probably worth a little more than the normal coin but not a great deal.
Clearly not a resource to use. Questionable author. Nah, he is clueless. You nearly said something nice about him. Please edit your post.
I'm actually seeing three obverse cracks. The first one is from the rim going to the D in UNITED. The second is going from the rim to the 1 in 1866. The third is going from the rim to the O in OF. Really cool coin.
awesome! thanks for the info! given its overall condition and the die cracks and all, what would you recommend i price it at in my etsy page?
I can't really be sure of a price from the images. While your images show the detail really well it's tough to know what the color and surface conditions are really like. Wild guess as long as there are no signs of cleaning, $100 to $200.
I fear the coin has suffered a harsh cleaning. This is evident by the gunk caught up in some small, tight areas of the coin, while the rest of it appears perfectly "clean." Crud that thick is normally only found in such small areas when those are the only spots a brush cannot reach. This likely reduces the coin's value by 50%, at least.
I am with you Dave, this coins to be harshly cleaned with serious whizzing. Longacre's Doubling produced much better relief and stepping. Notice the Obverse Areas to the right of the feathers. Seams to be areas two small for the Coin Doctors Whizz tool.
