Not really, you can find common dates in decent condition starting at $50-60 if you know where to look.
Newbie questions from a regular. What is the definitive guide for identifying the "O" (Overton?) number? And do those numbers ONLY apply to Capped Bust halves?
One of the best books is by Donald L. Parsley. It sells for about $70 to $80. Also this website has good descriptions & pics http://www.maibockaddict.com/1832-o-101a-r1-capped-bust-half-dollar.shtml
Thanks. I'm slowly expanding my library. Most of my references are for copper coins and low face silver.
O = Overton and yes it only applies to Draped & Capped Bust Half Dollars. I like the Peterson book the best. You may find www.BustieGuide.com useful also.
I just ordered the Parsley guide. Now I'll hunt for the Peterson one. Can't hurt to have several authoritative references.
