Ive been trying to buy CAC stickered coins when slab shopping these days. What are your thohts on CAC approved coins? Worth any premium?

I sometimes am willing to pay a small premium -- perhaps 10 percent -- for a CAC green bean. Frankly I have seen some stickerd slabs where I wondered what the big deal was.

A lot of dealers ask for idiotic premiums for stickered coins. That's why I don't have an abundance of them. At any rate, I don't go looking for the sticker. The ones I have popped up on coins that caught my attention in the first place.

    One collector's opinion, mind you...

As I search on the internet for coins, the first ones I look at are the CAC stickerd ones. Then the rest.

As for a premium for the sticker no, but a premium for a top of the grade coin stickerd or not yes

No, not really. There is only one sticker worth getting bacon a.jpg

When I am looking to add Peace Dollars, Walking Liberty Halves and Standing Liberty quarters I usually start with the CAC coins. In many cases there is a huge difference in the quality of a CAC Peace dollars compared to non-CAC. I'm sure some will not agree with that.

When I am buying gold I usually don't care as much. Some gold coins with CAC stickers can get crazy expensive.

Like it or not, CAC adds a premium to a coin.
And it's gaining momentum similar to slabs when they began.
I don't shop for CAC coins but if they can be gotten for a reasonable price I'm not going to ignore them.

Im not a huge fan either. I don't need yet another entity to tell me what to like or that the condition is acceptable for the grade.

I use the TPG grade and overall eye appeal to determine what I am willing to pay for a coin.

Besides I have observed far too many butt ugly coins with that green sticker to be willing to pay the premiums asked.

I respect JA and think he is a great person and asset to the coin world, I just don't personally need that extra sticker to verify what my eyes are already telling me.

You do have to respect the fact that he will buy any CAC coin you put in front of him for a fair market price.

I started a post a month or so ago about CAC coins...and got a lot of helpful info back. As with anything else, it's BUYER BEWARE as some are asking premiums of 75% and more.

all it is, is a grade upon a grade of judgement ...

Gold is one that I do generally want and will pay extra for, as they are really hard on gold and getting a puttied on just burns my asterisk

Yes it is worth it but it depends on what you collect and how much do you spend. If you are collecting coins that are not high value I would say no. I collect many types. I would not buy old gold that is not cac. There is a reason you can't find much cac old gold: it's all messed with gold!

My Stella? CAC with many reviews from high end dealers. My nickels? CAC for doctoring and overgrading issues.

I was not aware of the problem of old gold being messed with. CAC is identifying issues that TPGs like PCGS are missing?

There's a lot of questionable coins that get graded. And a lot more with non original surfaces. Cac helps weed some of that out. And their easier to sell. But there's plenty of good coins without beans too. Cac gold stickers are hard to find tho

For coins that are often messed with: bust dollars, most gold, expensive toners - yes.

Also for high grade coins that are priced at a premium. I wouldn't want to pay 68 money for a Morgan unless it was a sure enough MS68.

I must ask, isn't this a change for you? I thought you only bought CAC coins and all the ones you owned were sent in to CAC. Maybe I'm mistaken.

Does CAC give me a certain sense of confidence when viewing photos and trying to use them to determine whether I want to buy/bid on the coin? Yes. I think there's some value there.

In many cases, I think the coin in the holder is the reason for the premium, the CAC sticker just identifies the coin as such. I do think that many sellers on eBay add WAY too much premium for the CAC stickered coins.

In the end, I judge the coin for myself. The CAC sticker might have some influence on my decision, but it's only one of the considerations when making that decision.

    Ridiculous premiums are right.

As of today there is an 1856 Seated Quarter (one of the most common to acquire with millions minted) PCGS graded AU-55 with Gold Bean.

    Asking price? $500

    Guide book price for a 55? $215

Gold sticker means at least undergraded by one grade point.

So we reach a dilemma with this coin. Next grade is a 58, or we shoot up into the Mint State realm.

Obviously this coin is an AU. So let's say 58 because that's the only grade left that makes sense.

    Retail guide for a 58? $300

    Guide Prices doesn't touch $500 until MS-62 or a lousy, underpriced 63.

I offered $350 for the coin just to have a gold sticker CAC, but I sure won't be paying any more than that for this coin.

    Some folks are just delusional.

That's supposed to be kind of what it is, or, that is to say, the logic behind CAC. They have to say something justifying our laying out our money for a sticker or we wouldn't do that. The TPGs sometimes "get it wrong," there we go. That is so funny our sides should be hurting when we hear it. How can a "market grade" by a market analyst which is what a TPG is be "wrong?" It's like the real estate broker "got it wrong" on the price of the house. These TPGs are brokers, but for coins. They have all the market data and are basing on comparables just as are real estate brokers. The stickers are eye-appealing...I'll give them that.

I just dont get where someone thinks they have a shot at selling an AU-55 Coin, at they very best an AU-58, very common date quarter, and without any 'nice' toning (although frosty original surfaces) for more than double the price it should be selling for.

I mean I get the fishing aspect, but I even tossed a reasonable line out there and simply got rejected.

You know who buys these coins, the folks who are after labels and not coins.

Did I miss something here, should that coin be a borderline 62/63 and PCGS really screwed the pooch? Or is it just a nice 58 like I suspect. Either way, I wont be buying it at that price point and I desperately need an 1856 quarter.
