Well honestly, there is not a big difference in price between AU58 & MS62. Just enough to cover the grading fees and make a small profit.

the head of the coin looks to have some wear and the coin looks like it may have been dipped at some time. looks like a nice AU coin.

    Doug,

I agree with you this time. That coin shows a change of color up the leg (gray) with just a 2 second look. As I wrote, I didn't bother to look any closer before writing it was my AU; however I also voted for MS-64. That coin will buy or sell as an MS-63 or 64 all day every day by any knowledgeable dealer/collector. The posters seem to agree by %. If not, the seller is leaving a bunch of money on-the-table for someone else.

Actually, not 100% accurate about the number of graders on all coins or tiers. Additionally, the opinion of the finalizer is most important and can "trump" other grades. In an Ideal world ... never mind.

    Doug,

You may like to try some of the newer grading guides. The ANA Guide (virtually unchanged since original publication) is way outdated and needs major revision which costs money. If everyone followed the old standards you and I learned as published in that book much of the grading discrepancies between collectors would be eliminated. Unfortunately, most dealers back then and now ignore the book. Nevertheless, the introduction to that book (up to the Half Cent pages) should be required reading (along with the intro to Grading coins by photographs) by EVERYONE before they could post answers in the grading forum.

One other thing. In spite of what most think, if we were to eliminate the over-graded and under-graded TPGS slabs the millions of correctly graded coins by all four major TPGS would fall in very close agreement.

PS I'm not picking on you, I admire your long-time devotion to education. I'm just reading this old thread and adding some comments - just because this is an open form and THANKS!

Absolutely BS! It is done every day by knowledgeable professionals.

Not entirely correct either. There is more guesswork with regard to toning than with grading and more mistakes are covered by "market acceptability." Nevertheless, in very many cases AT and natural toning can be detected by certain characteristics. In one case years ago, it took a while before the services figured out that the "blocky" brown and green colored coins they were grading were doctored coins.

I believe if it looks natural, I don't care how or when it was done. Makes guessing much easier...LOL.

Doug is making the case for old technical grading. It is easy to teach someone this is what wear looks like (from whatever the cause) so the coin is AU. Now let the professionals assign a value to it (in many cases high MS). Then grading the AU/MS line would be a "black & white" decision that 99% would agree on. The other 1% are blind! You have told Doug nice and tidy, perfectly clean. Amen! IMO This could have been the perfect grading system with highly precise and accurate results. Unfortunately, the developers of technical grading were not coin dealers. In their "Ivory Tower World" they did not take eye-appeal into consideration because TG was only a way to ID the coin - not put a value on it! That's one reason it is not used in the market place. However, it is still a useful method you teach beginners how to start as conservative graders.

That is what I was told. I'm a newbie. It is an old thread that was sent to two of us by another long-time member who really knows his stuff. This thread is extremely informative. I have been reading many other "dead" topics in this forum to learn new things.

While reading this one (as suggested) for my education, I chose to leave some of my comments for the other Newbie to read when he opens it. I didn't know this is not allowed ): as this thread contains (IMHO) some questionable information.

I hope to hear from you again saying it is OK for me to continue adding to this thread.

It's fine. I was just pointing the fact out. It is an open forum.

I did some thinking last night. At one time the experts thought the world was flat and their writings reflect that. Over time that view changed.

So...On one hand, it is not fair to go back several years and leave a comment as some people who wrote opinions years ago may have changed their opinion after they became more informed.

On the other hand, new members who go back and read posts as I did can be mislead by some answers that may have become out of fashion.

I hope everyone agrees that it is best to leave comments on old posts because the information is out their forever!

What do members think? Until I find out for sure, I will add comments to old posts.
But I'm dying to read the discussion about the $20 that I did not get to yet...LOL.
