So I just picked up this raw 1882-CC GSA Morgan Dollar VAM-3 today. It came with original box and cert's. Aside from the discolorations on the obverse. The coin is nearly free of hit's on the obverse and the cheek is very clean. The reverse is pretty nice as well, although not nearly as nice as the obverse. It is not in the "Uncirculated" holder rather the "Silver Dollar" holder presumably because of the toning on the obverse. But my opinion is that this has an easy shot at a 66. What say you? I paid $235.00 for it.
There's only one contact mark on the cheek. There are some other light marks on the surfaces, but I think you have a good shot at a 66.
I'm going to say the market isn't going to like that cut on the cheek and those roller lines. If it's MS65, it just slid in under the tag.
Can you post any "regular" pictures of it, that might give us a different perspective. I can't see that it wouldn't grade above 65 with those pics (maybe the color on the cheek is different in hand).
The photo's I believe are showing the coin in the most brutal of light. In hand, it's a stunner. I picked it up at a local coin shop. I actually looked at it on Friday on my way out of town. They had an '83 and '84 as well. I always look at any GSA's I come across. The '83 and '84 were pretty typical 63-64's. But when I looked at this '82 I almost lost control of my poker face. They were all unmarked, so I asked the lady for a price. She grab's a loupe and the grey sheet. In the back of my mind, I'm thinking she's going to come at me with $700 - $800. She then remarks "I don't think it would go MS-65, so how about $235.00?" I was don't know what hit me harder, her inability to grade this or the staggeringly low price. I told her, "I'll take it. But I don't have the cash right now. Can I put $30 down on it and hold it until Tuesday?" She said no problem. She put it in a brown paper bag and my name on it. So the entire weekend, all I could think about was getting back and picking it up. Those roller lines are not roller lines. They are planchet striations. They should not effect the grade much if any. That mark on the cheek, left of her ear, is very shallow and in hand is not very distracting at all.
It doesn't matter if it is shallow or not. I've seen numerous MS65 CC's with a mark on the cheek, but I've NEVER seen an MS66 with one. Chris
