I went to my local branch on Saturday to turn in $97.00 in rolled nickels previously purchased. The teller asked, how long did it take you to accumulate all these coins. My reply was " not long I am a collector". After a short stare she reaches into her drawer and says " I can tell these are different because of the way they sound, do you collect these" I replied, yes like those. A $1.20 later and I am on way. image.jpeg

Ive had that happen a few times, a few tells have given me a dime or 2 that were silver because they just new they were old and I look for them, or they give you 40% halves because they only hold on to 90% for whatever reason.

Occasionally I score an Eisenhower or two. This teller said she had been saving these for a couple of weeks in her drawer. Lucky I guess.

Young tellers are the key, they are taught nothing and know nothing about silver coinage. I have scored full, original, uncirculated bank rolls of 40% and 90% Kennedy halves. I also scored full wrapped rolls of halves with the word SILVER hand written in large letters on the roll, and they just hand them to me. Tellers HATE halves and Ikes in their drawer, there is no place to put them and they have to count them every night. They will thank you for taking them off their hands. Very little chance with the elderly lady teller, and if she has a chain attached to horn rimmed glasses you can forget it, she been around and knows what's up, your not getting anything good from her. Take whatever they hand you with halves, they will love you and deal with you again. Whatever you get that you don't want to keep (Clad rolls etc) do not return them to the same bank, they don't want to see those coins again. Oh yeah, because I had built a good relationship with this one bank they saved an entire sheet of uncut dollar bills for me that a customer had turned in. The bills were still in the original cardboard tube from the mint, the bank paid the customer face value and sold them to me for face value also.

Also, try to get friendly with the 'Merchant or Business teller'. If there are any goods in the bank they will know about it and hunt them down for you. But like I said above, they do not want those coins coming back to them.

I have had very positive experiences with the chain attached glasses types. Maybe it is just me.

I assume that some of you have never been around when the banks open delinquent SDB's. When they do, it's "first come, first served!"

You'll have to check with your head teller. Every bank has different policies. The head teller at my BoA branch would let me know whenever they planned to open delinquent SDB's. I could get collectible coins at face value.

I was always mainly looking for silver. For me, those ladies always seem like they know all about silver and anything that comes through the bank is going into their own personal stash. Although one time I asked a lady if she had any halves and she gladly handed me about 7 or 8 rolls. Immediately after the exchange she said, "You won't find any silver in those, I already went through them." After searching them I found a nice little pile of 40%. She must have not known that 65-70 halves are 40%.

Not exactly. But one day, the teller at the bank is like, I have this (holding up a 1934 $20 bill). Then the head teller said, I have like $900 in small heads. They were mostly crisp! Too bad I'm only 13! I didn't have much money on me!

Thanks for sharing some experience with the tellers. Ya she was a young newbie. I have learned to deposit coins at another branch other then the one I buy from. Having bought back coins the I recently deposited.

Around here that would be called theft, but each state has different rules. Here, banks aren't allowed to keep the contents of delinquent SDB's. The owners must be found, as it is his/her/their property in the box. If the owners cannot be located, then the contents are sent to the State as unclaimed property. After a few years, the State will auction it off to the highest bidder.
