Does anyone else collect Mexican Libertads out there and prefer them over American Silver Eagles? It seems like the lower mintages of Libertads make them worth pursuing over the Eagles. Understand the demand for the Eagles is higher, but it might seem the libertads have more upside potential over the long term? Curious to anyone's thoughts.... This is all new to me. I'm a fan of the Libertads and believe they can be a good play. The lower mintages are nice (if you take a look at the key dates, especially the 1998, they go for multiples of what the key date, 1996, Silver Eagle goes for). Plus, if you can get them at the same price as Eagles (or even lower...i.e. within a few dollars over spot), you should be good. The downside is that the Silver Eagle is better known and easier to sell. Also, the Libertads lately (2015 and likely beyond, especially for the 1 oz) have had higher mintages and that might make them less likely to appreciate. But be on the lookout for the earlier years, especially if they are priced low over spot.
Looks like they minted under 1 million Libertads in 1 oz this year. Guessing US Mint will issue 30 million+ this year? Guessing Libertads have more value being more limited? I guess time will tell..
True, but for Libertads 1 million is a ton (similar to 30-45 Million ASE)...the demand for Silver Eagles is still a lot higher than that for Libertads (if the demand increases, then things can change).
I collect them both, but prefer the Libertads for the beauty alone. To me they are both just bullion and I collect them as part of my silver stack.
I also collect both but in terms of design I enjoy the Libertad more. The reverse contains all the different emblems, used over the years, for the Mexican flag. I don't really think about which one will be a better investment. Just collecting what I like!!
