I would buy one for a teaching set if these coins were not easily acquired with just a little looking. Best to find one in a GSA holder though and make sure the coin inside is a true Unc.
Did you mean to say you DO believe the drawing bench caused the lines? If so, I agree. I think "roller marks" has just been adapted to mean "drawing bench marks".
That is a very good point and caused me to learn something new in the last ten minutes! I have seen the rolling mills up close and personal at the Philadelphia Mint. At the time they were not in operation. I have only seen drawings of a "drawing bench." One is shown in Roger Burdette's book From Mine to Mint. Rollers appear on the bed of this device also!! I never considered that until you brought it up; but it made sense and is confirmed by the drawing in the book. If those rollers are worn (micro grooved at the least), they could leave striations on the strip also. I need to know the answer. HELP out there? Still the MOST IMPORTANT concept in this discussion is the total originality of the weak strike, and mint made striations on your beautiful coin.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. When I fist saw it, I thought it took away from the coin. But now I think it's a very cool example of what happens when you buy a coin made on a Monday or Friday!
Exactly sean. That's how I feel about my 89o. It's different and shows a part of the minting process, it's like a sneak peak coin. Oh, and the fact that it's a 64 that is lol
LOL. I have quickly learned to be very careful what I write. We have no idea what day of the week your coin was struck; yet now some reading this will actually believe it was minted on a Monday or Friday and start a new discussion. Hope I'm wrong!
...and I am still holding out in hopes the others will agree with Sean and Cascade concerning the originality of the striations.
Like my grandmother used to say "Hope in one hand, spit in the other. See which one gets filled first"
I should like to keep WTDH (that is the best post ever). I didn't understand it until the light bulb finally went off in my head. Some of you guys should do stand up comedy. Still hoping/spitting that at least the two of you will come around to the originality of the coin. Bye for now...see ya Monday.
I know the horse is already being used in an arts and crafts class somewhere, but I took the coin out of the plastic bag and decided to keep it. Thanks for all the opinions, if I grade it I'll let you know. Here's a couple of pics without at least the ziplock bag.
I've seen worse! And I had this exact same 4 page argument on this forum 3 years ago. Anyone interested in reading my opinion on the subject can read that thread in the link below. MS65 If it were without the adjustment marks
Here is a Finland 5 Markka 1946 that I posted a few years back that has extreme roller marks on one side. Notice how they are actually deeper and more prominent on the raised devices rather than the fields on this example. Conder's explanation of the mechanism (post 6 in linked thread) makes sense and is what I typically have seen, though it is directly the opposite of Doug's explanation that you would be less likely to see the lines on the raised devices. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/really-odd-1946-finland-5-markkaa-error-coin.197656/
Okay, with the coin out of the bag (no cat out of the bag), is there even the slightest question possible about that coin not being MS? Had you taken a nice, clear picture like that, nobody in their right mind would say that the coin isn't a typical GSA uncirculated Morgan. See, the bag added all kind of distracting marks in itself. That coin will grade--My guess is MS 62 or 63, and it doesn't make a huge difference either way. The argument was moot, and one can never learn what caused the marks--as Paul said, it was 5 pages of arguing over nothing. It is a nice, typical GSA. We don't need a workshop on roller striations.
Well, I thought that was stipulated. It's an original, unmolested lower Mint State Carson City Morgan with striations I've seen on a hundred other Mint State Carson City Morgans just like it.
