Hi gang, Although I already had a decent tetradrachm from Antioch for Pilip the Arab, I came across the following one and couldn't but acquire it, the protrait being so strong and lifelike. I simply felt in love with it and had to have it. So here it is, and as usual I will have to decide which one I keep, for, in the end keeping both are they aren't the exact same Prieur reference....So weeeeak ! Philippus I, Tetradrachm Antioch miny 244 AD ΑΥΤΟΚ Κ Μ ΙΟΥΑ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟC CΕΒ , Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ΕΞΟΥCΙΑC, Eagle facing, head left, holding wreath in beak, tail left. Wonderful example, almost looks like a Roman Mint Ant. of his. My only one. Philip I (244 - 249 A.D.) Syria, Seleucis and Pieria. Antioch Billon Tetradrachm O: ΑΥΤΟΚ Κ Μ ΙΟΥΛΙ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟC CΕΒ, Radiate and cuirassed bust left seen from the front. R: ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ΕΞΟΥCΙΑC ΥΠΑΤΟ Γ, Eagle standing right, wings spread, head right, wreath in beak. ANTIOXIA/S C in two lines below. Antioch Mint, Stuck Year 3 246/247 A.D. 11.7g 26mm Prieur 359
Thanks Mat, I like that left facing bust of his. I think it's rather Prieur # 359 than 360 though, 360 having the eagle with wings spread, while yours has its left wing (left to us, right eagle's wing) behind leg, which is even better, Prieur giving 7 examples of # 360 and only 1 of # 359 Q
Terrific coins!! I had a few bids on these types the last few weeks, but my limited remaining budget wasn't enough to overcome the challengers
