I accidentally bought another coin

I have to confess something. Last night at 1:00AM I was browsing a dealer's catalog of Greek Coins for some of the coins in the top 5 for 2016 list that I made. I started toying around with putting some of the coins into the cart and going through the motions of buying them, only to stop short. "No, I will not be a bad man and give in to temptation, I told myself repeatedly and backed out." At some point during these back and forth, I must have dosed off in front of my computer and when I woke up I realized I had an email message in my cell phone's inbox. The message title made it clear it was a receipt for the purchase of a coin.

The thing is I don't honestly remember actually buying a coin, unless I somehow accidentally hit the process order button as I dosed off in front of the computer. I'm not joking, I don't remember actually going through with any purchase while I was awake.

I'm going to leave the actual coin a mystery for now. I won't open the package until January 1, 2016 and pretend it is my first purchase of the year. That's my punishment for my moment of stupidity and for breaking my promise, even if it was accidental.

Sorry for being anticlimactic. Turn in January 1 for the big reveal, I guess. I hope I can hold out that long, or I shall be very upset with myself.

Any of you bought any accidental coins? Probably not.

No, When I ever I look at very expensive coins on Ebay I try to log out before looking so I don't accidentally buy them :) I once accidentally bought a car part, luckily I contacted the seller before he sent it and cancelled the deal.

I'm looking forward to seeing what your coin is, I probably would have given in by now and looked :)

    You are not alone :D.

I picked up a nice Roman Republican at auction and have no memory of bidding, although I do recall the auction and another coin or two I won from the same session. It is a lovely coin and I'm glad I got it, whatever the circumstances :).

    Rome, 115-114 BCE
    AR denarius, 20 mm, 3.91 g, 10 h
Obv: Helmeted head of Roma right, X behind, ROMA below (off flan)
Rev: Roma, helmeted, seated on two shields, holding spear before her, she-wolf standing right at her feet, head turned back, sucking Romulus and Remus. In left and right fields, two birds flying towards her.

Also, once I was watching a live auction while logged in and accidentally clicked bid. I was moving the pointer to the click on something else. The screen scrolled just as I was clicking and the click landed on the bid button. I won before I even saw what it was. Fortunately it wasn't terribly expensive but I did not want it and have already sold it.

I was using an ipad to make a final-seconds bid when someone in the room distracted me with a question and I forgot the decimal point. I bid thousands of dollars on a coin on which I'd only intended to bid tens of dollars. Fortunately the underbidder was sane and I only went about fifteen percent over what my max bid would have been anyway. Gordian Sesterius.jpg

You guys have some nice accidental coins. I hope mine is at least half as nice. :hungry:

I'm sure I'll at least have an idea of price in the next 24 hours when I look at my updated bank balance. But I refuse to open the email or visit the site to find out what it was, and I promised myself the package will stay closed until the first day of the year. That way I technically did not break my promise :meh:

The cat frequently jumps on my lap (and laptop) and tries to bid on coins. Gotta be careful when watching auctions.

This time next year you will be expected to post your ten favorites of 2016. Who knows, maybe the accident will be on the list.

I had exceeded by budget for the month when, after a bit too much good rye, I was browsing Vcoin's "new" list and bought this denarius. I don't even think I considered the price, I was just like "oh that's cool". I found out the next day that I got a pretty killer deal because the dealer had set the price incorrectly and I paid less than he bought it for at a ROMA auction the month before, but he shipped it anyways. I wish drunk me could get more good coin deals but so far no dice.

I've never accidentally purchased a coin unknowingly. I have, however, sat and stared at a picture of a coin on my computer trying to talk myself out of it.

    N.B. That approach never works.

That's EXACTLY what happened to me a few days ago, which is highly peculiar since I don't own a cat. This was my accidental purchase, a fully-silvered campgate of Constantius II. They just don't get any better than this...

Red, even without knowing how much of a deal you got on it, that is a great accident.

So far, I've had the same experiences as 'V'.......and with the same results

But I did place a slightly larger maximum on a Otho denarius than I meant to and competitive bids kept pushing the price higher and higher as I kept grimacing in pain until the auction finally ended....so I spent about $75.00 more for a coin I would've let go....

Well, it is an Otho and a scarcer left-facing bust LOL

BTW, It does look better in hand....

At least the coin won't require counseling later in life when you come clean that it was an accident. :shifty:

No ancient coin is really an accident. They are all special in their own way. Cue Barnie the Dinosaur singing "You are special" 20 times in a row. (I've got a 5 year old, so I've had to put up with that song far too long.)
