Just found this baby while hunting. Coolest cud I've found. Can someone tell me why it's not copper coated on the cud.
Cause it ain't a cud but loss of copper plating - Damage!! Material has been taken away not added on like a die chip!
It looks like just loss of plating but it is elevated. Notice from the top of the A to the rim there is the beginning of it with copper still on it. Trust me, it's above the surface of the rest of the coin's surface. Edit
whoa....ok so I went and used a wet cue tip to give it a little cleaning and apparently that moved some of it off the leg of the A. That's why the second pic reveals the leg. Could it be a cud and planchet error?
It could be a retained strikethrough, but you won't know unless you can lift some of it to reveal an identical impression on the coin. Chris
If you moved it, I'm guessing it's simply something on the coin. With that said though, it's a gem even if only because of the "appendage". Quite a befitting gesture for the tyrant...
Well, pretty cool - seeing the zinc stampings are then plated - maybe some PMD? Zinc has a much lower melting point than does the copper plating.
