What's at the top of your wish list for 2016?

    Sallent Live long and prosper

The year is ending, and 2016 is just around the corner. And while it's been fun reading the threads on people's top coins for 2015, this is your chance to share what's on the top of your list of coins to get for 2016. A list of that sort could be extensive, so perhaps the top 4 or 5 coins?

For me, it's been a good year. In 1 month, I have acquired 8 ancient coins, and thanks to all of your input and wise advise I can truly say I've avoided making the mistakes most newbies make...ie. just getting coins for the sake of getting them and ending up regretting the purchases later. I've made some wise buys and focused my acquisitions thanks to all of you, and have come out ahead.

Looking forward to 2016, these are the top 5 I want to buy!

I'm looking to slow down the pace of acquisition and focus on very specific themes, so my top 5 have to do with just that.

GET CLOSER TO COMPLETING THE SET OF GOOD EMPERORS DENARII

I already have Trajan and Antoninus Pius, so #1 and #2 on my list put me closer to completing the set.

#1 Any denarius of Nerva. I'm attaching a sample picture, but any denarius of him will do.

    NERVA.jpg

#2 A Denarius of Hadrian. Again, any will do. We'll see what I find when it comes time to get one.

ADDING SMALLER DENOMINATION GREEK COINAGE TO MY COLLECTION

I started out big with the Greeks with my Alexander III Tetradrachm, so now I want to pick up a few examples of smaller Greek coinage. Here are the ones on top of the list.

#3 Euboia Histaea Tetrobol. I want one of these because the boat on the back kind of looks as if the figure is riding on the lines of a musical sheet that have been bent to form the outline of a boat. I just think it looks cool.

    Euboia Histaea Terobol.jpg

#4 Kyzikos Lion Hemiobol. I love boars, and this coin not only has a boar, but a lion and a fish to boot. Getting 3 animals for the price of one just seems like such a bargain.

    Kyzikkos Lion Hemiobol.jpg

#5 Chersonesos Lion Hemidrachm. I know, another lion. However, I really like these little coins.

    Thrace Chersonesos lion Hemidachm.jpg

So that's my top 5 to get for next year. I have no idea how many coins I'll purchase next year, whether it be 5, 10, or 15 (who am I kidding, probably will be more like 25 or 30). But if I only purchase 5, these would definitely be it. They will be my top priority when it comes to next year's acquisitions.

So what are your top coins for next year? :cyclops:

I'm aiming for a short-cross Henry II and John too. Maybe grab a Stephen if I can find a reasonably priced one. Don't have a particular ancient 'want' at the moment - I need to sit down and figure out the next step for my ancient collection.

The top coins on my wishlist, in no particular order, are:
    • A nice Republican quadrigatus
    • An early denarius, preferably one of the very early Second Punic War denarii
    • A silver sestertius
    • An aes grave. Probably will end up getting a triens
    • A nice example of the Crawford 56/2 as. It's a nice big coin that usually comes in deplorable condition, but I'll find a nice one one of these days
I am really hoping either a nice quadrigatus, sestertius or aes grave in my price range will present itself in January but we'll see

As one of those much-derided 1-per-emperor collectors, my wish-list is aimed at filling holes in my collection:
    - Antinous medallion or drachm
    - Gordian I & II sestertius or denarius
    - Majorian tremissis
    - Pescennius Niger denarius
    - Flavius Victor siliqua

Hopefully all of these will be included in my Ancient Secret Santa present. :shame:

2016 will be a good year if i can obtain all of the above!

A clipped Majorian tremissis realised 1,100 CHF at the recent Nomos auction.

Clipped was good enough for me. I was willing to pay that much too, but I let it go, because I'd just spent big on my planned 2016 travels.

Happy to arm wrestle you for the next one that comes on the market :)

    1. Cnut penny (I really enjoy reading anglo saxon history)
    2. Henry V penny (my favourite Shakespearean play)
    3. Any coin of Vindex (I am interested in the coins of the civil war)
    4. A nice portrait denarius of Marc Antony (who doesn't want a coin of Marc Antony)
    5. A nice tet of Alexander

That should be enough for the year.

    Several interesting lists here. Mine:
    1. A Roman Republican coin with a plumb bob control mark to go with the plumb bobs I bought this year.

    3. Orfew, I'd go for a Mark A if it had a Cleopatria on the other side.

And I have found just the coin for Orfew! There's this Mark A/Cleo on vcoins at the moment for a mere $39,500:

Yes, i've heard being married and spending big on coins aren't compatible. I really stuffed up on a date recently when i casually mentioned i spent a few thousand dollars on a coin earlier the same day.

My wish list only ever gets longer, never shorter. Thinking about what's at the top, my mind settles on examples of these coins that I had bid on but did not win in 2015.

    Tiberius dupondius, MODERATIONI reverse:

Corinth stater with Triton control symbol:

    CRETE, Gortyna stater:

Actually, even though I really like those types, it's those specific coins that are haunting me, and now I don't know if any other examples will do.
