Looks like a P counter mark. Anyone seen this one before?

My thoughts exactly. I do believe it to be a counter mark. Either that or the designer placed his last initial there for more recognition. Nice looking coin. :)

yes, a kind of countermark, but a very unattractive one

No wonder it's so yellow. Someone P'd on it

I actually thought it was a pretty decent one. Not too big... almost looks like it belongs there. I overlooked it when I bought the coin, and did not even notice it until I took pictures.

That one would qualify as post mint damage. Not interesting enough to appeal to a counterstamp collector but a definite distraction to someone collecting gold by date or type.

You're right 99 times out of 100 here, but how often do we see counterstamped gold? I'm out of my competence here so I'm not sure but I don't recall seeing very many like it over the last ten years online.

SuperDave, if they carried a premium, I would start stamping this very afternoon.
Thank you for the fine compliment but I am just putting in my two cents like everyone else.

The omega man was the most famous counterfeiter of St Gaudens double Eagles. They fooled almost everyone. The only tell was a little Greek letter omega on the reverse.

And the letter P is the greek letter "Rho". Hence the Omega man and the Rho Bro.

Having to explain the joke takes all the fun out of it.

I got the omega man, but didn't get what the Rho Bro part was about, haha
