I do know that broad struck coins retain all the die details but are spread out because it was struck without the collar. This looks like damage from circulation!
I can agree with PMD but what about that die crack that runs right into the damage? No way a damaged or shattered die could have caused this? Just asking.
I don't see a die crack but I do see a large scratch. A die crack would be raised whereas a crack or a grove in cut into the metal. The light reflects on the dim where the damage is but it looks as if it has been filed. Just too many thin straight lines in the rim area. I would call this PMD. The scratch is just above the 4 in 2004. It runs pretty deep in this photo.
And if you look close enough you can see where the copper plating was worn away and some of the zinc is exposed on the rim
Thank you guys. I figured as much that is why I asked. Now the edges on the outside our around the rim all the way around the coin and the flatness of the penny are very smooth and undamaged.just so you know.
