    BRAVO!

The beauty of the collection is indescribable. I don't even wanna know how long it took you to assemble them. I scanned the collection and looked for coins that caught my eye at first glance. For some reason, my eyes immediately gravitated to the 1931-D & 1931-S. The 31-D for it's stunning target toning and the 31-S for it's blazing luster in combination with a more subtle patina. The other coin that immediately jumped out was the 1943-S with delicate rainbow toning.

And the 1957-D is 1 of only 3 (I think) PCGS MS67BN Lincolns ever graded by PCGS of any date/mint -- none higher.

By the way, I started this set in March/April 2015. Although I did have a very few (isolated) toned MS Lincolns in my collection accumulated from 2012-2014. Maybe 4 or 5 total. For example the 1957-D (posted above) I bought in June 2011. At the time it was an NGC MS67starRB -- and it crossed to PCGS as an MS67BN. But I didn't decide to try for a complete set of Wheatbacks until Spring of this year. I honestly did not think I would find so many nice looking coins and push my set towards 100% completion in less than 8 months. Just about everything I bought from eBay or Heritage in open auctions ... with a few from private collectors like Robec, CopperColor, MonsterCoinz, and others.

Is the 1943-S the only one of the steel cents that tone? I have a 43-S that has similar colors but can't find the other ones with color?

The only one I have is also an "S". However, it does not look like that one. It has a bluish cast with a hint of pink at the right angles.

I agree with you about toning on the 1943-S. The S mintmark seems to be more prone to toning in the steel year. I actually have a 2nd toned 1943-S in queue for a TrueView right now (slab photo below). This new 1943-S appears to have even more color than my current example (esp on the reverse). I haven't seen anything for sale with (gradeable) color for the P and D mints in 1943 (so far at least). I did scan CoinFacts and found a single rainbow example for both P and D -- so they are out there -- just rare.

Stunning, Winged! Nice to see you're still contributing to these boards. I'm sure your overall collection is equally impressive these days.

This kind of toning is what you get from a Wayte-Raymond album. It appears that many, if not most, of these are severely undergraded. This kind of beauty deserves a special eye appeal designation and should fetch a healthy premium, even over RD. What do the TPGs have against this type of toning? Silver toned like this brings astronomical prices and sometimes the uglier the toning in silver the higher the grade. Go figure.

Oh my, @WingedLiberty, you've been busy! Do you collect coins, too, or just candy?

Really, that's a candy store. Do them a favor, keep them out of prison. Keep them in your own holders, and seal them up tight as a drum. These don't need the TPGs to tell us what they "market grade." They're all high technical grades. If the market can't see they're all premium toning, the market needs to get its eyesight checked.

The 1928 does stand out. I actually bought this for $90 from CT Member MonsterCoinz. At the time it was in a PCGS Genuine-QC slab. However I loved the way it looked and thought it might grade if I cracked it out and resubmitted it. And it came back MS65RB. The Guide price at that grade level is exactly $90. So for this coin I paid no premium for it (unless you consider regrading costs).

A number of these coins I bought on the cheap though. Many were raw coins on eBay. Included in these raw pickups was that monster 1934. This neon toned 1934, I bought in May for $65 and it graded MS65RB. Guide price on this one is $25. So this went for about 2.2x Guide. However the value of this is all about the color -- and at $65 it was a pretty big bargain (IMHO).

Now a few of these coins I did pay more of a premium for. Generally those were ones with great color that were already slabbed by PCGS. For example the 1945-D, which was already PCGS slabbed at MS65RB and green CAC stickered -- and I paid $203 for that on Heritage. Guide price is $10, so for the 1945-D I paid about 20x.

But I think in general -- in sum total for the entire set -- I was probably right around PCGS Guide Price, which is a pretty good bargain for all that eye appeal.
