When I saw the thread title, I thought it was about me and my recent ancient coin binge.

All joking aside, ouch. Cast coin alert! Someone bought a real junker of a coin. I feel bad for them.

Which is where the seller belongs. The buyer belongs in an ancient coin special needs class. If anyone on this forum bought that coin, FESS UP NOW...I'm going to give you a tongue-lashing and then save you $300. :)

The seller says he accepts returns. Anyone think he'll get it back?

Thankfully I can say that I've learned enough over the last 3 weeks to tell that was fake. If the seller, who apparently deals in ancient coins couldn't, I'd stay away from him in the future.

Who knows. On any given day, probably hundreds of fakes get sold on eBay. It would be pointless to post them all. The only reason I posted this one is because the "coin" is so badly done as to be a caricature of fakes. It's as if someone said, "Let's try to make a coin that looks as fake as it possibly can."

Well, I can't see the coin in question, but I certainly trust you guys. Still, I would have liked to seen what you're talking about.

Little bubbles on the eye of Athena, and other places on the coin where there shouldn't be anything of the sort if this coin was struck. Also, the face and other details don't seem as sharp or as high relief as they should be for a coin in that condition.

At least that's what stood out to me. There could be more.

I've emailed so many eBay sellers questioning the authenticity of their wares. And still they proceed to sell obvious replicas or outrageously misattributed common coins. One guy was advertising three Sebastianus, two Julius Nepos, an Anthemius and a Glycerius. Fortunately eBay shut him down when i raised a complaint. Isn't this kind of conduct criminal?

It's hard to find what you're looking for on eBay - with so many fakes, and so many miserable massively overpriced coins from the 'world renowned expert' at 'highrating_lowprice'.

Ah, yes. I see the seller is from Cyprus. I make it a point to not even look at coins being offered from Cyprus, let alone buy.

I can only think of two things more likely to end poorly than a well financed beginner and eBay promises. One is Bronze disease; the other is below. You have to scroll down.

Thank you for this thread, I will be canceling my purchase! Hehe, just kidding... but really... To many of you, this is an obvious fake. To someone like me, it is not. I have been wanting one of these styles, and this is another reason I only shop for graded.

Even a casual scroll on acsearch should have raised some questions in that winning bidders mind. The typical selling values and the overall style immediately scream something is off....

Obviously, that bidder is not a member of CT--- otherwise he or she would have taken advantage of the advice of others on this forum.

This was not the only fake on that page (in the other selections). There is one there that might be a great buy but I can't tell if it is fake from the photo and we are judged by the company we keep.
