from the other thread http://www.coinworld.com/news/world...discovers-fake-krugerrand-in-fake-holder.html Does anyone think the rare coin market will be crushed by fakes and what they think a possible timeframe would be?
As long as you learn what you collect I doubt the counterfeiters will win . Where is the other thread ?
https://www.cointalk.com/threads/fake-kuggar-rand-fake-holder.270844/ Nothing wrong with two threads if they foster discussion imo.
I heard if you take antibiotics long enough your immune system weakens and becomes lazy; thus opening the door to foreign invaders. Paying TPG's to do our work for the last 30 years is our antibotics. And now the invaders are here, in force. Nanny doesn't bail out coin collectors, so I'm guessing we'll get what we deserve. IMO, the rare coin market will not crash completely. Ancient collectors, black cabinet collectors and anyone else who can authenticate will be a floor as they pick up bargains. It would be the world turned right side up-those who did the work get rewarded; those who drank the Kool-Aid get punished.
Quality graded coins purchased from quality dealers and auction houses will survive. Small time dealers and Ebay dealers will suffer the most. The raw coin market will be hit hard as there are far more fakes unslabbed then slabbed.
No, I don't think fakes will kill this hobby. In a way, I agree with @longnine009 analogy; however, I believe the TPG's will continue to find ways to prevent counterfeiting of their holders. How? I don't know, but it's certainly in their best interest to do so. Education is the best way to protect yourself. I do believe the trusted seller sources will continue to get stronger as people take less risks when buying. IMO, they'll look to those sources to help them authenticate a coin/holder.
Coins have been counterfeited for over 3000 years. People have collected for just as long. The hobby will be fine. The people who are strictly investors may bail, though. No big loss, IMO.
when the fakes become identical to a 100x magnification level how will knowing your coins help you? there is no theoretical limit on how accurate a counterfeit coin can be.
Then why are most fakes pieces of garbage which most can tell fairly easily and the others that are better , one can tell if you really do the legwork . Theory doesn't cut it in this situation . The best fakes I've seen are the Mideast gold fakes , yet they have tells because the counterfeiters are in it to make money they cut corners .
