Early Mon Dharma wheel (dhammacakra) silver coin. Reverse: Srivatsa (an ancient Indian symbol dating back to the Indus culture) with a moon encased. Full unit with 12 spokes. 9.5g. Circa 7th century. Indigenous to the Gulf of Marta ban between present day Pegu and Moulmein in Burma. Although disputed, the dating of these coins based on the use of the Buddhist-centric motifs seemed to hover around the 7th century AD. Though narrow, they are compensated by their thickness although smaller units do exist.
Wow! This coin/item is really interesting. Ever since you started posting here, I learned quite a lot of fascinating information about coins, history, and minting methods. Thank you for your input! keep it coming!
Thank you very much @Daniel Jones .. you're most kind.. I notice quite a lot of Greek-Roman Eurocentric knowledge here which are all excellent. Hope to add a bit of diversity and share some other cultural themes here
That is a really interesting coin, and a type I am completely unfamiliar with. Where can one get one of those? Very interested.
Myanmar has rules against coin exports similar to Greece if not mistaken. I got mine from Thailand. But not easy to find.. real ones at least.. I would avoid eBay unless you trust the seller..
@Loong Siew This is by far my favorite coin of all the ones you've posted. Not that the other ones weren't interesting, because they were. I just really love the way this one looks. Congratulations my friend, that is quite an impressive collection you have.
Thanks @Sallent .. it has a very simplistic yet classic look.. it's also nice on hand being very solid and weighty.. like a pebble
