How come PCGS has 1976, 1977 and 1978 Ike's with the 40th Anniversary label??? It hasn't been 40 years yet.
PCGS. I only own a 1974 Ike with the PCGS 40th anniversary label, but here are some 1976-1978 listed for sale on eBay... 1976 1977 1978 Isn't it deceptive marketing by PCGS to have these out already? One could go one step further and even say it's fraudulent.
That's the thing. It's confusing. In 2011 it was the 40th Anniversary since they began minting Eisenhower dollars. When PCGS says "40th Anniversary", to me that implies 40 years from the year in question. So if PCGS is commemorating the series, then why are they labeling 1972-1978 Ikes with 40th Anniversary labels? Ok so maybe PCGS says the label signifies 40 years from the date on the coin. Well then how come 1976, 1977 and 1978 coins have the label? By the way, for those of you wondering, Eisenhower was President from 1953 to 1961. So it's not a 40 year commemoration from his Presidency.
Let me clarify something... I think the deceptive part is labeling something anniversary for an 8 year period. It's deceptive in that it implies it's a 1 year special.
It is the 40th anniversary of the Ike design dollar. Perhaps all Ike coins submitted in 2011 had the option of getting that label?
That would make sense, but there's a hole in that theory also... My 1974 Ike with 40th Anniversary label is in one of PCGS's new slabs. Meaning it was slabbed within the last year. So unless it's a counterfeit holder, the 2011 submission idea pretty much goes out the window. I had originally posted this but forgot to put it back after one of my many edits. I have made too many edits here lol.
They made a bunch of labels and used them for any Ike they graded. Looks like they still have some left.
Since the Ike series started in 1971 and ended in 1978 maybe PCGS labeled every coin in the series as 40th Anniversary so you can collect a full set????
Yea it must be for the series and so that a complete set can have matching labels. I know this is nothing that hasn't already been said before but great marketing once again by PCGS. I mean how else do you make a common crap coin more desireable... tie it in with the series design anniversary.
I'm I'm sure - lots more money to be made that way!! PCGS had to come up with someway to have collectors send their Ikes in to be graded.
To clarify, I do like the Eisenhower design, but I only collect the silver variety. I only buy the silver ones for myself and also to resell. The clad ones are the ones I consider crap.
That's for sure! Who in their right mind actually came up with this hideous coin? Did they really think people would carry these around in their pockets to spend??
I really don't see the point of making anything an anniversary on the slabs except for the above mentioned. Maybe in 2018 they can have the 140th anniversary of the Morgan so we can all have our slabs redone.
Or the labels of "FIRST STRIKE" - what the hell is the difference between a First Strike MS69 or just a regular MS69 grade - Just another way to sell slabbed coins at a much higher premium than what the market dictates.
