I went to visit the re-opened Washington Monument in Mount Vernon square today. It was quite a nice visit as they have some really good educational presentations along with some film of the work they undertook for the restoration. One piece of video showed the removal of the original corner stone laid in 1815 and what was found inside the center of the stone. There was a time capsule inside the corner stone. There were coins, a newspaper, a few books and such. The coins ranged from half cents thru gold coins. Most of the silver was pretty dark and could use a nice bath.. same with the copper...They weren't coroded or anything just hard to make out. The dollar dated from 1799 and most of the silver and copper was from 1801 thru 1811. The real winners were the gold coins. 2.50 1807, 5.00 1802 and a 10.00 dated 1801... The 2.50 had a mintage of just over 6800 total pieces... These were the best shots I could get.. and of the obverse only sorry to say....
That's why the " Masons " took the corner-stone from the white-house, when they were redoing the foundation . Good job Masons, they'll never tell where its at either .
Thanks for sharing! For such a significant find you would think those gold coins would be displayed in a much better fashion.. why pins? These are valuable coins not insects
