I got this coin a few weeks ago, Obverse Bare head of Augustus facing right Artemis Tauropolos, holding billowing veil, on bull charging right. RPC I 1626; SNG Tübingen 994. 7,20g 23mm Circa 31-30 BC? also, i was wondering about the color of the coin, in hand it it bright turquoise green, with a tan color underneath not like any of my other bronze coins, is the color natural?
I've seen every shade and combination of green and brown in the patinas on ancient bronzes, so you probably have nothing to worry about. Regrettably, however, some coins do get painted with artificial patinas. If you want to test the coin, dip a Q-tip into some acetone and rub it lightly across the edge. If the Q-tip starts turning green, it's absorbing paint. But if it is painted, it's best to leave it be - stripping it will only reveal a bright, harshly-cleaned coin.
Well, I don't have acetone and couldn't find Q tips, so i used water and toilet paper instead, and just placing it against the coin turned it green.. So it probably is painted.
