Lee, did pcgs add the plus after graded it, or did you pay for it before it was graded and then added it ?
    Hows that work ?

I'd always felt that the coin should have graded 68-69.

Upon its discovery, it was sent to the IKE Group who then forwarded it to ANACS for attribution. James Wiles ended up attributing the new Obverse Die Variety and Doubling and new Reverse Die Variety as "Mixed Relief" DDO-023, ODV-010, RDV-007 and ANACS slabbed it as such with a PF64 grade. (??) Tom Delorey (aka CaptHenway) validated it as a Prototype Strike.

I questioned the grade and was told that "Proofs" have different standards than "Business Strikes" and since it was being called a "Proof" yet had no frost nor mirrored fields, was limited to a maximum of 64.

I sat on the coin for a couple of years and then took it to a Long Beach Coin and Collectibles show for the "Have a PCGS Expert Look at your Coins" which PCGS has at every one of their shows.

David Hall examined the coin and agreed that it was indeed special so it was submitted at the show and later examined by other well known PCGS experts.

I received the SP65+ grade as they did not consider it a proof but more of a "Special Strike' coin.

After receiving the grade I emailed them to look again since I felt that 65+ was simply too low.

The response I received from Gordon Wrubel was as follows:

"Our top graders thought 65, but went along with my plus suggestion due to the special look of its surfaces. What kept us from a higher grade was the opaque film over contact on the forehead, hair, high cheekbone and lower jaw; a few contact marks on “WE” and the tip of the bust: a scattering of smaller spots on either side; and an environmental film about the peripheries."

I'm not a big fan of Ikes...not yet anyway. That being said, it is one of the best looking Ikes I've seen. I'd be extremely proud to be the owner! Very sharp coin, and it has the "super cool factor" to go along. Thanks for sharing the story behind it Lee!

You are the man Lee, I'm trying to catch my breath .
    What a beauiful coin .
Dam plastic, what was the mint thinking of ..

Can they do anything by cleaning the surface at pcgs, to help the grade out ?

Ikes have a lot of bang for your buck, nice big engish lettering and looks nice when doubled, tripled and quadrupled .

They aslo offer hud doubling and working die doubling on the same coin with one being on either side of the coin, and thats cool ...

It should help the grade and thats what pcgs was complaining about was the coating on the coin .

That coin turn out to be 156, not 159 .
I'll take some quick images on the reverse for marker ..

Can I send the coin in to get slab with this DDO & DDR, or do I have to send it to IDDD first .
    Thanks Lee .
