Last week I posted a thread about the difficulty of making a decision on two 1963 Franklin toners for the Dansco. Being a coin collector, I've got OCD. If I find a coin I like and the price isn't too bad I'll buy it. I realized early on that I was getting more Franklins than I needed for my toner Dansco, so I ended up buying three Danscos. However, I am trying to put together a Top set, and then have the surplus coins wend their way down into the surplus Danscos. Given that the coins are raw coins my collecting goal is not Great coins, but nice coins on a reasonable budget. I've got three 1963-D Franklins here that show different characteristics. Do you enjoy the looks of the coins, and which one is your favorite? The first one is imaged by Shane Canup. The next two are imaged by Bob Campbell. I think they both did excellent jobs.
I personally like the first coin pictured, but the reverse on the last picture looks enticingly well struck.
Honestly, I like the original look of #2. I also like #3, but there a many marks and the big one in the hair kills it for me. Just wish #2 had the luster and strike of #3.
I'd have too see the entire page/album but I like 1 or 2 depending. If you're going for in your face color then 1. If it's a subtlety toned album then 2
Maybe I am just getting old. Number one simply looks like a poorly stored coin to me, and all I see is corrosion on the edge, not pretty toning. Sounds like I am the outlier in that opinion though.
If the toning enthusiast didn't pick that coin, you are welcome to accept his action as acquiescence to your point.
Don't take offense by this: I really don't think #1 is natural. The colors don't look right, they don't behave correctly on the surface of the coin, and the type of toning is not commensurate with the normal type of toning seen on 63 Franklins. You've got a coin that looks like a bag toned coin - but that is highly unusual. I do not like this coin, and would not buy it. #2 and #3 both look attractive, and far more like what I would expect from a 63. The colors appear quite subtle on #3, but the strike is strong. The obverse of #2 is really nice, but the streakiness on the reverse could be distracting. I think overall, my favorite of the three is probably #2.
