My next find was a 1870 Shield Nickel. Now this may be my best find in awhile,as I'm quite sure there's going to be plenty of options on this one....but that's ok ...as I believe it may be a new variety or a sub variety of another very rare 1870 DDR. Most doubled die's on Shields are DDO's there are only two known DDR's. Both are the 1870 Shield nickels. Next let me say this ...that there are some crazy varieties in the year 1870 on Shield nickels. I believe there to be 19 total, the mintage of the 1870 was 4,806,000 yet ranked 9th in overall rarity for being found in uncirculated grades. Now back to the coin in question. there is a variety an DDR listed as (2-R-III) an R-7 cross ref. FS#5c_005.9 Doubling on all reverse lettering, most stars, and the 5 in the center of the coin{ reverse } The next is an R-8 F#-13 {05.17} The doubling shows on United with the spread towards the center of the coin Doubling is seen on the" States Of Am " with a clockwise rotation. The stars also show doubling. Now another funny thing about the coin I found yesterday is the revers lettering. Starting with "UNITED" the Serif on the E and the top of the D is broken, Next the Two S's in States as well as the A are also broken letters, The F in Of is broken, In AMERICA the R is almost broken and the A again is broken. and lastly the S in CENTS is broken. now broken letters on the reverse of a Shield is nothing new. You find as many as 4 on the 1868 Reverse of 68 those being The C in cents, The C and S in cents, the C,S in Cents as well as the first S in states, the C & S in Cents, the first S in States and the D in United. As these make up the 5.5 varieties of an 1868 rev. of 68 reverse hub IIb . My coin has a total of 9 broken letters. not the standard 4 or non letters broken. My coin has just about every star doubled, and my coin "5" in the center of the reverse is completely doubled. Now you can also read more at Shieldnickels.net about this rare DDR on the 1870 shield nickel I don't want to cause any copy right issues, so just go to the link , click on the top 20 shield nickels varieties ,and read up on the 1870 DDR's . As I stated there are two listed. I'm sure I'm going to hear MD here as well as die deterioration and that's ok as everyone has a option. But if you read the text at Shieldnickels.net and how Howard explains why this has happen your get a better understanding. He states that on this variety that the 1870 is of additional interest because the doubling is the result of hubbings from two different reverse designs - this is a reverse of '70 (reverse IIc) impressed over a reverse of '67 (reverse IIa). Now my nickel may be a later die state , but I plan to send it to Howard to get his option on this coin. Ok Let's hear it what say Ye? study the images and let it fly LOL....
Very nice coins and write-up. It leaves me wondering though, do you go to a show with a specific coin in mind that you have researched, buy what you like then research for the veriety, or just have a Rolodex in your head?
All of the above... to answer your question . But the statement about the Rolodex is somewhat true. Sometimes it's the luck of the Irish
