Carthago's coin is really nice IMO. He sacrificed a bit of camel head but not much and got the full name REX ARETAS which I consider the best part. He is right about them being common coins but the two parts I want most being on opposite ends of the same side makes finding that perfect coin harder. This is a two sided coin issued jointly using Senate funds (ex SC) by the two Curule Aediles of that year. The scorpion side is rather normal extolling the actions of an honored ancestor of Publius Hypsaeus named Gaius Hypsaeus who captured the town of Prievernum. The odd one was the camel side since it showed the king who had earlier surrendered to the Curule Aedile who issued the coin rather than an ancestor of his. Blowing his own horn on a coin like that must not have set well with conservative minded Roman Republicans. I do think that this coin has a strong case for one that belongs in every collection that includes any Republican denarii.
Sweet pickup, Pish .... your flan must be a bit tight (scorpionless) ... my example shows most of the goodies
Here's mine. A bit worn, but it does have 'color'. (Seen better in hand) It also has the REX ARETAS legend.
Love those examples posted. I've probably lost out on bid the last three times I went after one.... Well, there's always NEXT TIME!!!
Thanks. I satisfied my craving for things Arabian this morning. This denarius is coming along with the Scaurus. Minted in Rome to commemorate Trajan's annexation of Nabataea as Provincia Arabia, that's the personification of Arabia on the reverse, holding a palm branch, with a camel at her feet...
Terrific coins JA!!! CONGRATS!!!! Both are still on my want list!!! Both are top winners to my eyes!!!
I already bought you a Christmas present - a handful of lottery tickets. I'm sorry to say you didn't win anything.
@Pishpash your OP coin is wonderful. I have been trying to find a well-struck one like yours, but not yet. Well done! And, it is sympathy time... Your husband MUST go the extra mile for Xmas... Strike while the iron is hot... ouch.
