Hey Phil! Glad to see you here. I just joined the board this week and have enjoyed a more relaxed discussion here than what I usually get into. You have one of the finest RR collections around and I'm sure you'll get your Scarpus quinarius someday. And that Antony/Cleo is just outstanding! My Scarpus denarius
Again, not quite the end but close: My favorite legionary denarius in my collection. Image once again courtesy Andrew McCabe, who photographed part of my collection a few years back. Phil Davis
Finally found an image of one of my Scarpus denarii, the very scarce SCARPVS IMP legend variety, Crawford 546/7. So this is the very end of my collection, unless I someday get the quinarius that follows it in Crawford (546/8.)
I'm accustomed to seeing those legionary denarii with a good deal of wear. It's absolutely stunning to see one in that condition and it certainly demonstrates how beautiful they can be.
The legionary denarii stayed in circulation a long time. Because of their relatively low silver content, Gresham's law didn't result in their being driven from circulation along with better-silver Republican and Imperatorial denarii. It's not unusual to find a few even in Severan-era hoards. As a result, the surviving population displays considerably more wear on average than is typical of the population of other types. Not too many were as nice as this one even when they were made though.
I suppose this would count as my final coin in my set of pennies for English monarchs (until Lizzy goes and chuck comes in...) While for my English monarchs, I will likely find a large fractional penny for Elizabeth, but this is the current end of my 'proof decimal coins' as well. While this set goes beyond ancient/medieval, I'm focusing on the medieval kings right now. As for my coins of the silk road - I'm still determining what I want included in that set, and am comfortable taking it up to the founding of the Americas (and possibly beyond with trade dollars). For right now, this set is firmly in Ancient and Medieval history (and will also be useful for illustrating economics and trade in my history class...).
Yah think?! With the exception of that tiny banker's mark, it's an insanely perfect, full bordered, great style, huge flan beauty! I don't have a legionary that's remotely close.
Until today I was thinking my LEG IV was at the top.... that's magnificient Phil sad Q * * not THAT sad though
Oh ! And I forgot to answer the OP question : no set stopper here on my roman series ; as I buy what I like, should I come across something I really like and is sligthly out of focus, I don't mind and get it. It's a different story for my theme collections, e.g. the principality of Dombes, as they completely stopped producing coins at some point Q
I packed up and left of my own accord quite awhile ago. I didn't know there was a purge. Explains all the familiar "faces" here. Viva la liberte.
Cucumber - Your LEG IV is at the top and a truly magnificent coin. I'd love to own it. I don't have a IV but I hope you sell ours someday so I do!
Mine doesn't hold a candle to Phil's or Cucumbor's and I hope to upgrade it one of these days, but it does have some really sweet toning and full legends: This is currently "the end" of my Republican/Imperatorial collection and will likely remain so for a while until my budget allows me to focus more on the Imperatorial issues.
