Quick everyone run the nomads are coming!!! The nomads are coming!!!! Asia, Bactrian Region (AD 195- 230) Jouan - Jouan (蠕蠕) Nomads AE Unit 23 mm x 7.82 grams Obverse: King standing right sacrificing. Pellet above (?) Crude Tamgha (Huvishka?) No legend. Reverse: Oado (?) running left with cloak open. No legend Ref: None
Another one that I don't want to offend anyone, but the Virgin Mary looks like Count Chocula on this coin: Byzantine Empire: Michael VII (1071-1078) Miliaresion, Constantinople (Sear-1873) Obv: The Theotokos (Virgin Mary) standing facing on dais, orans.+ΘKE ROHΘEI - TΩ CΩ ΔOVΛ / MR - ΘV. Rev: Michael, crowned and wearing military attire, standing facing, holding long cross and resting on hilt of sheathed sword, dot below his right elbow, double border. +MIXAHΛ RACIΛ O ΔΚA.
I've always thought the reverse on this Gordian III sestertius had a certain "skeletal' quality to it
TIF, I am glad you clarified you wanted a Hostilia 4 rather than the Hostilia 2. The show I attended yesterday had a nice 2 for sale by a young dealer I know. He tends to pay too much for coins and marks them up to a point that he can offer big discounts. Yesterday I heard two other people talking about the coin saying that they would gladly pay $1000 for it but he was asking $3000. Now that is scary. I can't say I see anything scary about the coin My offering here is this faceless goat/Juno of L. Papius. Can you believe some ghoul bit off here entire face in one snip? ...or did she do it herself playing with that evil harpa behind her head. This was long before safety labels were required on toy harpas. The reverse minor type is, according to Banti #176, a sword in scabbard but I am not sure how we are supposed to see that. I don't know what I would call it. What is really scary is that I would buy a 'Stannard scooped' coin this bad but it is a really clear coin other than its one little problem and has a really nice harpa. The BM's is better by far! http://collection.britishmuseum.org...lection.britishmuseum.org/id/object/CGR154858
It wouldn't be complete if I didn't poke some fun about my religion (I am a devout Hindu ). Three of the six heads are visible. The top three are off-flan... Pre-Kushana Yaudheya: Unknown? Six-headed Karthikeya / Shashthi Drachm (Pieper-1113var) Obv: Six-headed Karthikeya holding spear in his r. hand, his l. on his hip; Unknown circular Brahmni legend to the right Rev: Female deity (Shashthi) standing above wavy line, ten-arched hill with nandipada on top on r., railed tree on l.
Vespasian as Frankenstein. Vespasian AR Denarius Uncertain western mint, 69-71 AD RIC 1375 (R2), BMC 422, RSC 295a Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r. Rev: PACIS EVENTVM; Bonus Eventus stg. l., with patera and poppy and corn ears Super rare and perhaps super scary looking.
Spooky coins posted so far! I always thought that this Victory looked a little too thin....... Perhaps it is the angel of death Maurice Tiberius AV Lightweight Solidus Constantinople mint 582-602 CE As for death, in the 1930's it had a name. Stalin! This is one of the few moderns I am adding to my collection. Country: Czechoslovakia, Stalin 70th birthday Obv: Czech lion with Slovak shield, denomination above Rev: Uniformed bust left, date at right Denomination: 100 Korun Composition: AR Weight: 14 gm Diameter: 31 mm Date: 1949 Ref: KM# 30 Grade: UNC
This As of Tiberius always strikes me a little 'scary' since it's such an ugly coin!!! Hmmm, Are there any Greek issues of the River Styx and the 'Ferryman'???
I'm late to the party but have particularly enjoyed this year's offerings. Here's a ghoulish Constantine the Great... And a Severus Alexander that I personally turned into a zombie earlier this year...
A couple of truly scary coins... 1989 NFA auction; Ahenobarbus aureus. Later condemned as fake. This Athens dekadrachm sparked some lively discussions. Some experts said fake, others authentic.
Not my coin, a friend sent it to me to clean for him. It is a Tet, I forget who. It didn't look that much better after I took it back to silver, but it lost the skeletal look.
Now that jwt posted that dizzying 'Steve' post again, Bing will probably post that kissy/ smooching old crone photo Now THAT'S SCARY!!!
Ok. Well Steve was fun but here's my "creepiest" coin and great for Halloween: Zeugitana, Carthage, BC 300 - 264 AE, 4.78g, 19mm; 2h Obv.: Head of Tanit left, wreathed in corn Rev.: Horse head right Zombie horse! This coin is awesome.
It looks like Justinian got bit by a vampire! Notice the "fang" marks on his upper neck. JUSTINIAN AV TREMISIS, 527 - 565 C.E. About Extremely Fine, typical flan waviness, few slt. obv scratches, 15.8 mm, 1.40 grams, Constantinople mint Obverse: Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Justinian to right. Reverse: Victory advancing right, head left, holding wreath in right hand and globus cruciger in left
This coin reminds me of this Septimius Severus, Nikopolis ad Istrum, AD 139-211 AE, 3.11g, 16.5mm; 2h Obv.: AV KAI [CE] CEVHPOC, laureate head right Rev.: NIKOΠΟΛΙΤΩΝ ΠΡΟCICT; crescent and one star Ref.: AMNG 1436v; Nikopolis BMC 17 Unsure why Wildwinds does not include the final C on the obv even though all the pictures they have include it. My coin includes it so the C is mentioned in the obv legend. Also, the [CE] is off flan. He looks more ghoulish in hand
*dang* => apparently I missed the Halloween party?!! Great spooky coins by everybody (very cool) Ummm, here are my Top-4 scary additions ... => good ol' Frankenstein ... sweet ol' Perseus & Medusa ... ... rats in the streets!! ... and the creepy two-bodied owl ...
