While I collect Roman Republican (have quite a few) I have zero admiration for the men represented on the coins any more than for the tyrants and fools that followed. That is something I have never understood. Collecting Caligula does not mean I admire him any more than spending a dime means I liked Franklin Roosevelt. I also have no use for breaking history into neat packages and only knowing about the ones that appeal. There is one really good reason IMHO for including Augustus and stopping your collection there. Volume I of Roman Silver Coins by Seaby stops with Augustus so collecting Tiberius means you have to buy another book. Of course I'd prefer you buy volume I of Millennium Sear which goes through the Flavians which would open up the rest of the Twelve Caesars (another start/stop collection idea I don't like).

Still my 'what I like' collection has its limits. I show here with excessive frequency my John VIII Byzantine (not bad for 'really late Roman'). I do not really like machine made coins but I can collect the last of the old school 'hit them with a hammer' issues like the Russian wire money. We ll collect what we like and what we can afford. Buying coins because you think you should is rarely satisfying; buying coins with money you don't have can have a downside, too.

John VIII - next to last Byzantine emperor and 'stopper' for poor people like me.

Peter I, Russia, wire AR kopeck - Part of Peter's plan to bring Russia into the modern world was to make Russian coins like those of the other European nations. I do not have one of his big, beautiful rubles which came after I stop. Russia was criticized for being slow to leave the ancient ways. That is the reason I have any Russian coins.

    Wonderful Posts!!!

A most of us have said, there's no end in sight or any series stopper for me---just an endless variety of ancients that I'll keep trying to add to my collection.....until the grim reaper stops all the fun.:dead::)

    Awesome coins guys and gals!
My silver issues of the Flavians ends with this very rare denarius struck by Domitian in the last few days of his reign before his assassination.

I seem to have signed up here in 2009, but I think this is my first post here. No sense rushing into things. As Carthago knows, but suppose other members don't, I also collect RR silver. I start with the introduction of the denarius in 211 BC (maybe!), Crawford 44/5, and finish, arbitrarily enough, with the coins of L. Pinarius Scarpus of 31 BC, the last silver listed in Crawford. The absolute last one would be Scarpus' very rare quinarius, Crawford 546/8, which I don't actually have (and probably never will, since the few known examples are so dreadful.)

Logically I should go a bit further, to Octavian's post-Actium coinage anyway, but since I'm after not just the main types but the Crawford sub-varieties as well, I've already bitten off more than I'm likely to chew in one collecting lifetime.

I have a couple of Scarpus' denarii, but I'm on Halloween guard duty and can't look for pics right now. (My wife is, um, skittish around trick or treaters and I'm chained to my post in the kitchen with the laptop.)

As I recall you have a coin I admire that has an obverse minor type of Janus asses. Right. Welcome.

I have the same collecting habits as @Mikey Zee so no show stoppers for me.

Hi Doug! Yeah, that's my coin. I'll try to post an image, but probably not tonight. I can only do it from the pc upstairs and my wife will shoot me if I'm AWOL from my post.

Nice set stoppers and great coins all around. That last Tony & Cleo is impressive!

No set stoppers here... I've wondered how long it may take for a specialization to find me, but the more time I spend in this hobby, the less likely it seems I'll ever specialize. The breadth of fascinating areas to collect just keeps expanding!

Similarly, I joined in 2007 but only started to post earlier this year. I seem to recall there weren't too many ancient coin discussions in those days.

At any rate, welcome back Phil!

Haha, ya Bing's right. A bunch of ancient collectors got booted from some other site and this place took off!

I know. I was one of the bunch. But it really took Steve's humor and his good eye for Ancients.
