My grandfather had left me some Iranian gold coins from the 70s. Hideously ugly. I eventually sold them at least they were gold
I just saw this. Probably the ugliest portrait ever on a US coin, not to mention that it was minted in 1999, not 1759.
I am puzzled why some folks mention the SLQ in this thread... you wanna know which "design" is really a joke? Look at this thing:
I'm not a fan of the SLQ either. I do own a 1917 Type 1 for my type set though. It's not in my top 3 ugliest, nor is it in my top 3 best designs. 1) I think the obverse is WAY to busy 2) With the round shield, I'm reminded of Captain America, making it a little comical for me. 3) I hate the "panels" to the left and right of Ms. Liberty. It looks like she's leaving the jury stand with a shield in her hand 4) I could also do with out the stars on the panel Bottom line for me, there is just so much going on that it's hard to focus your attention to anyone spot.
I'd have to say The Top 3 WORST: 1. Susan B. Anthony -- BY FAR 2. Lincoln Pennies. 3. Roosevelt Dimes. The Top 3 BEST: 1. Peace Dollar 2. Indian Head Pennies 3. Sacagawea Dollars Why did we go from putting gorgeous images of Lady Liberty on our money to ugly old dead men(and one ugly old dead woman)?
As a silver collector, I began to appreciate the buffalo nickel a lot more after getting the 2001 Proof Buffalo Dollar commemorative. And, many of the hobo nickels are pretty neat to look at.
I understand why people don't like SL Quarters, Barber's and Buffalo nickles. In a worn state, which most are and have been viewed as, they are far from attractive. Their design isn't a very good design in that respect. But when viewed in uncirculated condition, their artistic merit lends a beautiful design. It's their durability of design that falters.
I feel like I've replied to a thread similar to this a couple months ago, so I'll give my 3 ugliest in hopes that they match what I said before! 1) The Eunice Shriver coin 2) SBA dollar 3) I guess Franklin halves. I'm more "meh" than "yuck!!!" about Franklins; they just don't do it for me.
