In a recent thread posted by red_spork, he showed a fabulous denarius minted by L. Pomponius in the name of the magistrates Cnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus and L. Licinius Crassus ( see https://www.cointalk.com/threads/a-roman-denarius-from-the-newly-founded-colony-of-narbo.269339/). About the same time, I purchased a similar denarius minted by L. Cosconius, another junior magistrate at Narbo. So I guess you might call this a sister coin to the one red_spork posted. L COSCONIUS MF ROMAN REPUBLIC AR Denarius Serratus OBVERSE: Helmeted head of Roma right, L . COSCO . M . F. around, X behind REVERSE: naked Celtic warrior (Bituitus), brandishing a spear & holding a shield & carnyx, driving a racing biga right, L LIC CN DOM in ex. Struck at Rome, 118 BC 3.72g, 19.13mm Cosconia.1. Cr.282 / 2 Ya gotta love Roman Republic issues, even the ones with a biga, triga or quadriga reverse. If you've seen the movie The Eagle (not a great movie IMHO), one of the first scenes shows the barbarians using a biga to attack the Roman formation: Post any coins with biga, triga or quadriga.
Very nice. Thank you. I only have the OTHER Narbo and is in the linked thread above. I really like your capture. And The Eagle was entertaining, but not enrapting for me.
Nice one, Bing. I posted my C. Malleolus in the thread you linked, but looking at it now I think I need to reshoot it... the picture is not quite the coin.
I need to re-shoot mine as well. It looks out of focus. TIF told me I'm probably trying to get too close. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks for the comments.
I have the two and the four horse, but no three horse version. I will have to remedy this. Nice coins Doug.
I have both trigas. Only 2 denarii issues had trigas. I have a single horse, but without chariot. I have not seen a five horse. Of course have several bigas and quadrigas. @Bing you need to get the trigas!
yea! i wan one of those with the barbarian warrior...nice bing. type is on my list. here a couple of republican chariots...
@Bing ya gotta get those Trigas! They are some of my favorites! Lovem, no matter how ugly mine are... RR AR Denarius Claudius Pulcher 111-110 BCE Sear 176 TRIGA RR AR Denarius C Naevius Balbus 79 BCE Sear 309 TRIGA
Another coin from today's show is this Narbo M. Aurelius Scaurus also having the reversed D and a nice strike of the carnyx carried by Bituitus. Several moneyers issued these. Are we going for that set? The only other I have is this L. Porcius.
Drats!!! I'm missing a triga.....so I'll just post this triumphal quadriga denarius of Rubricius. Hmmm, the driver must be on a 'guild' required break
A couple of Stags A couple of Oxen A couple of Mules A couple of Horses Four Elephants Four Horses nuthin' but 2's and 4's ... => man, I gotta find myself a sweet threesome!!
I'm not sure there was a five horse chariot . There was a six-horse chariot called a seiugis or seiuga, but I don't recall seeing one on an ancient coin.
*rats* Mikey-Z => I was really hoping that one of the lady coin collectors might comment, but I guess you'll do, my friend?!! ... just jokes, brother
The best Crawford 282 in my collection. These Narbo denarii are very challenging to find nice. They're very often corroded; so often that I suspect an atypical combination of trace elements that make them susceptible to the soil. I don't know if the metal has ever been analyzed.
