I still like you (a bit less, but it's still there)
FAIL Hey, apparently I have another example that might fit into your cool thread ... Oh, and it's one of your cool M-H examples => 48 Units Bosporian Kings, Sauromates I - Implements of Battle – Æ 48 Units Date: circa 98-104 AD Size: 27.94 mm Weight: 9.49 grams Obverse: TIBEPIOC IOYΛIOC BACIΛEYC CAYPOMATHC, Sauromates seated right on curule chair, holding sceptre tipped with the head of Trajan Reverse: TEIMAI BACIΛEωC CAYPOMATOY, Round shield with spear, surrounded by battle axe, horse head, helmet, and sword in scabbard, mark of denomination (MH) below Attribution: MacDonald 417 Description: A nice example with light tooling and smoothing typical for this issue. VF/VF => yah, I always smile when I see this coin, for it was a very valuable learning-lesson from Mentor (he stated that there shouldn't be any typical "smoothing and tooling" accepted by us collectors!!) ... I have tried my hardest "not" to collect any further examples that have even the slightest bit of tooling and/or smoothing!! Oh, but I still "love" this super-cool coin!! ... and I still like you a tiny bit (and I love your OP-coin)
what a gorgeous coin TIF! phat and fat..i love a big thick coin with some meat on it bones. i don't have any coins from these fellows..
Well doggies. That’s a mighty fine pond skipper you got there. The dickins you say, it’s a Sept Severus! I don’t rightly know but Jethro reckons Sept Severus musta come just before October Severus. (My humble attempt at speaking rustic-country-hillbilly in fond memory of Buddy Ebsen). Beautiful (right purty) coin TIF.
The gorgeous OP coin inspired me to do some research into Bosporan history, which was sorely lacking in my numismatic book lurnin. I even came away with a new coin, but from the later ruler Thothorses. I'll post it when it arrives, as the seller had nothing better than a scan.
So here is the stater of Thothorses I bought last week. I have not found a solution to lighting it on the copy stand, hence the in-hand pic. Really, I have to stop buying coins I can't photograph because it does nothing but piss me off. Still, what an odd and curious style these things have. The color is a deep, glossy forest green.
I have a handful of such coins... despite a hundred attempts, I'm still not happy. Your in-hand shots look great though!
WOW !!! That's as beautiful an ancient coin as I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. BIG CONGRATS Tif!!!! Hmmm, AJ is right---I keep hearing that theme song over and over and....
It would be my personal HONOR and PRIVILEGE that I periodically and continually remind you of that song in random postings... LOL
My only Bosphorus cane today at the Richmond show. It is a Sauromates I 48 nummia AE28 marked McDonald 397/6 by the seller but I do not have the book to check that. It is not a great looker but it is not smoothed offensively either (right Steve? - you had to be here long ago to get that one). I have no idea where they get the 144 units but the 48 is pretty obvious with that huge MH on the reverse.
