Sounds to me like you're the one doing the jumping on me for my inference. Shouldn't the question rather be whether the inference was reasonable? How many times does one have to spell a term incorrectly before it's reasonable to infer one could benefit from a little reading and learning? You can't deal with that, so you're jumping on me.

She explained, anyway, it was the phone's fault three times. Don't jump on me now for inferring she could use a new phone.

There is no reason to rip them a new one because they use the phrase 'double die'.
Their problem is, not being fluent in numismaticese, is that they have always heard 'double die' and not 'doubled die'. Because of the way people speak, the "D" is not said. Try it yourself, listen carefully while you say 'doubled die' in normal conversation, you'll hear 'double die'.
We have to be a little more gentle with numismatic virgins to keep them interested in learning, to keep them coming back to CT and to make them a friend.

Yes, I have been guilty of being harsh to some newbies, but I am trying hard to be better. Sometimes my moods make me a little less tolerrant, but I'm working on it

I'll accept that, Rick. Will you accept that some of these newbies are just camera phone and microscope crazy? I'm not going to name names, but their reluctance to read and learn is just irritating. Some of them take fantastic photos, though, I'll give them that. My feelings, they don't want to read and learn? Join a photo club.

I agree, but let's not beat them up until the time when they should know better

Yeah, I was trying to soften it up, taking that into account. Looking back on it, I guess I should have done a better job. :D

It's things like this that make me not participate in this forum. The man asked a simple question if he had a double die coin and he was chastised for not knowing what a doubled die coin is or what it's called, double/doubled. I often read this stuff but it turns me off.

Now you boys are off on Pluto somewhere. Why don't you get back down to Earth? "Chastised?" "Exactly?" There's a generous word-choice, if I ever heard one. Calling it a "double die," and three times, means you misunderstood times-three what actually happened, what you're looking at, what you're looking for. It describes an "error" that came from two dies. It's not insignificant, it's very significant. Collectors who still use "double die," interchangeably, conceiving of it as some kind of half-cocked semantic preference, demonstrate zero-appreciation of the reason for the proper term. Namely, the proper term describes what actually happened. Ergo, the reason it's the proper term.

Look, get off my back. She has horses in her avatar, so she can't be all that bad. I was trying to get her on the right track. I hadn't "chastised" anybody. Give it a rest, and give it up with the piling on. Thanks.

if you say them out loud, they sound the same. so if you've only heard it you wouldn't know how to spell it.

I said that before, but the perfessers here don't care about that. They all like to feel superior when they get to tell you if you don't know, you must be stupid.

You think that's why we try to help, to "feel superior?" Really? Or is it just why you try to help?

Doug has a signature line, "Knowledge...share it." Perhaps he should tack on, "...so you could feel superior."

I think you got it wrong, Rick. And let the record reflect, I'm not telling you that to "feel superior."

OP, Please don't get discouraged from the hunt. This is a tough crowd, they mean well but some sit atop pedestals that they themselves have created. J.T. Stanton (Co-Author of the Cherry Pickers Guide) wrote a great article years ago about the different type of doubling that can be found HERE . Take a few minutes to read it, perhaps print it out, that should at least get you on the correct track. Best of Luck to you.

I can sort of understand why someone would get so annoyed over someone saying double die. The word that sets me off is when I hear someone say "addicting." More and more people are saying it. I always have to tell them, the word is addictIVE. Addicting is not a word. I even heard a TEACHER say it!!! Grrrrr.

You'll see a lot of negativity on here. Just brush it off. But you really have to do alot of research and look at photos to match closely. Lincoln cent online and resource website works. And if you feel you have something dont always go off everyones opinion on this site. Go to coneca or minstate.com to get license experts look at it.

Anger Management is na just joking. But face it there are so many worthless dies out there that resemble the real deal and doubles use to be doubles until they changed the books

Not being negative, just factual: you responded to a 6 yo necrothread. New members often do that. How do I know? Because I did it too, when I was new here. So one of the first tasks new members must master is checking the age of the posts they find and deciding not to resurrect it.

This bit of knowledge is based on experience, not a license...experience is what CT has and what is valuable, and the experts here share it freely...jmho...Spark

Why is this post being resurrected? It's 5 + years old and the poor OP disappeared after the abhorrent treatment given her by a member.
