Most Overrated/Underrated US individual coins or coin series

...so the real question is:

"Which series will be in higher demand (or lower supply) in the future...than it is now?"

 

Most overrated and overpriced: Any graded silver or eagle bullion coin. Right behind that, graded recent releases from the U.S. Mint.

 

Two more overrated:

VAM Morgans: This was a silly attempt to make common Morgans less common. Do we really care about die chips, date position, etc.? I only care about date position if I found an 1893-S and wanted to tell if it was real.

MS-70 Silver Eagles and First Strike Silver Eagles: MS-70 is near useless on a chunk of bullion that was minted two weeks ago. Is the First Strike designation really worth the extra $18?

 

Overrated: U.S. Mint uncirculated and standard proof sets. Underrated: 1865-1876 Three-Cent Pieces. Up to MS grade.

 

Underrated - 3 Cent Nickels, Shield Nickels, Jefferson Nickels in FS, MS Ikes

Overrated - MORGANS (still like them though) and anything made this millenium

 

I agree that Morgan dollars seem to be overrated, but I think it's still nice to own a popular die variety (spitting eagle, hot lips, 7/8tf, micro-o etc.) What I can't understand is why people pay so much money for key dates, even for coins with heavy wear or problems.

Underrated? MS-70 first day of issue ;-)

 

Morgan dollars way overrated, although you gotta have a few in your collection. Half-dimes and half-cents and possibly silver 3-centers are underrated.

 

I agree, people go crazy over MS70 silver eagles that were literally minted less than two weeks ago.

 

Overrated: Common MS63/64 Saint Gaudens selling for $300-400 over spot when there are well into the hundred of thousands graded.

Underrated: Many of the gold Liberty coinage with less then 30,000 minted per year and graded numbers in the hundreds.

 

And isn't the MS70 designation usually a bit of a stretch? It denotes coin perfection, something which isn't seen very often on a proof, let alone on an MS coin.

 

I really like your posts! I have not seen many original posts in recent month's that have impressed me this much. That said, I agree with you on the 1909-S V.D.B. cent. I also think the most over rated coin series is capped bust halves. Sure, they are old, but common, and the design looks modest at best. Other over rated coins are CAC certified, even though that isn't a specific series. The most under rated is silver state quarters, IMO.

 

This is an interesting observation. I had not considered 3 cent nickels popular, but they can be interesting along side the 2 cents, and silver 3 cents.

 

Considering their age and the history behind them, I think the Liberty Seated Dimes are not only under priced but very affordable in a mid grade fine condition. Set aside about 6 key dates that might set you back and you could have a nice affordable and historical set of coins. Especially true if eliminating varieties and staying with a standard collection of years and mint marks. Of course there are going to be key coins in every series that many of us will never be able to touch, I think now is a better time than later to fill out a collection of these, especially for younger collectors who will have time to watch this series appreciate in value. IMHO Morgan's have always been over rated, the biggest, baddest coin to collect and done in my hawkers on TV, etc. The 1909VDB-S is a must for any Lincoln collection regardless of the hype. The 1922 Plain is a variety/error which has no place in a regular collection. Large Cents starting at 1808 are also a good bet in mid grade. A nice collection of Liberty Seated Halves from 1853-1978P in Fine 15 is also possible with the exception of the 1874CC. There's a lot out there with a lot of upside potential that is classic and affordable without any hype.

 

Liberty Seated Dimes are really underrated, but you know what's even more underrated? Liberty Seated Half Dimes.

 

Yup, especially the teen's and 20's with mint marks.

 

Any modern coins graded 69-70 is a joke.

It ain't a stretch if one of those TV dealers is paying a third-rate grading service for the designation, if you catch my drift....
