I had never seen this coin variety before and have been working on identifying it. I think it is of the design of this coin: http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/Salzburg_1520_batzen "SAINT EMPIRE, SALZBOURG, Archevêché, Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg (1519-1540), AR Batzen, 1520, Droit : Les écus de l'archevêché et de l'archevêque accolés sous un chapeau de cardinal. En dessous, la date. Revers : B. de saint Rupert de face, tenant un saloir et une crosse. Très Beau à Superbe(Archbishopric of Salzburg, Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg (1519-1540), silver batzen of 1520. Obverse: arms of the archbishop and of the archbishopric, cardinal's hat above, date below; reverse: facing bust of St. Rupert, bearing a crozier and a salt casket. VF - EF)" But my coin is so sloppily executed I'm not sure what is going on. Size is about 26mm & 2.8g. and it has the right feel of a silver coin of this era IMO. Thoughts? My coin on top - Coinfacts coin below Thank you
It's more weakly impressed than usual, but really not out of the ordinary for European coins right after the medieval period
Maybe this is something similar to your coin... http://www.acsearch.info/search.htm...s=1¤cy=usd&thesaurus=1&order=0&company=
Aha! Thank you!! I suspected something like this was possible but it is really interesting to see that it is a known variety- "Contemporary Italian forgery."
