Well I wanted one and saw it and got it for a decent price. NGC and there are about 65 of them graded. Thoughts? Information as to value? BTW - tested it with some paper and could see letters through the mirror. Doesn't really look that good up close but it IS there.
Value: $150-$220 depending on the quality of the mirrors. I have seen them sell for the higher end, but I have seen some towards the lower end and even a bit below.
This is the kind of Modern coin which owns appeal for the same reason as Classic collectors like their coins - scarcity and exclusivity compared to their peers. In 50 years, a PL Kennedy - few as they are - will be the type of coin the dedicated numismatists of the day seek. Terrific long-term upside.
The 1970D is pretty common in PL, but it is still really cool. Somewhere just under $200 is a good place for these. Now, the other 40% dates in PL are much scarcer, and much more valuable. Prooflikes are known for 68 through 72 (all of them being from the D mint). Of these, the 70D is by far the most common, ranging up to 66PL (with a couple of DPLs graded). 69D is the second most common with 10 slabbed (my 65PL being the highest graded, with 2 at that grade). Here is a 68D graded MS-65 (but which is fully PL - I just haven't submitted for the designation review). And a 69D graded 65PL. And a 70D graded 64PL, for good measure:
I think I have a PL Kennedy. Does PCGS attribute it? Or would it be better to send to NGC? A couple of pics:
Puleeze! Take it out of the holder pre-photos. Pictures in the holder are useless, especially on these PL's.
I don't know what the PL standard for Kennedys is, but for a Morgan PL requires 12pt newspaper type to be clearly readable reflected from 4-6 inches away on both faces, or something similar. It should actually reflect like something you'd be willing to shave in, if you could hold it farther away. When it comes to Morgans, you *can* shave in a DMPL example.
No, for unknown and inexplicable reasons, PCGS does not designate PL on these. They will only designate PL on Morgans and certain "special" moderns. The obverse of yours looks like it has nice reflectivity, but the reverse looks weak. Both sides must be fully reflective to get the PL, otherwise you'll get a Star.
Looks like one to me, I've had PL coins and cameo Kennedy's that the majority here said would not go PL or cameo.... Doesn't mean the folKs here we're wrong it's just hard to convince people with crappy photos
Neat information, I did not expect to see what I did when it was in hand....sort of a disappointment really. Still as a Kennedy Collector, it is a nice addition for $115.
What were you expecting, and what did you see? If you were expecting the deep mirrors the picture in the OP appears to show, that is highly unrealistic. If you were expecting watery black mirrors like a proof, that's not how these look. These are business strikes - the strike is going to be weaker than a proof. The mirrors were an accident, a result of die polish - you're going to see a lot of imperfections in the surface (like my pictures show). The mirrors are going to be noticeable, but if you were expecting a coin that looked like a proof.... well, that isn't really what these are.
