Mexico 1918/7 50 centavos overdate

I consider this one of my better overdate finds to date, based on catalog value alone.
The markers are rather subtle, but the 8/7 is there if you know what to look for...

There is also a secondary marker that I've seen on every example, a clash across the cactus/base of the eagle. This helped me confirm I was seeing this variety in the seller's pics.

The catalog value is a little shocking for this overdate--but in a good way :greedy:. I've been looking for one for several years now, so I can only guess it's a scarce variety. The prices given are also confirmed by some auction sales I've seen.

I'd put this coin as a solid VF, although it does have some hairlines. Still, I cannot complain for all of $10.59! :D

Nice find. And that clash is so obvious. Is the clash found on all this variety? Are you a raw only collector or will you send it to get certified?

Yes, the clash is present on all the ones I've seen. I generally avoid owning slabbed varieties, because it makes it very difficult to study/photograph the coins once they're in those little plastic tombs. :wacky: In this case, the coin has some hairlines which would probably get a details grade, so we're back to square one...

You want one? Get ready to shell out 50 Centavos x 1050 = $525.00! ;)

Or just cherrypick one off ebay--that's one reason I show all the markers here--to help fellow collectors find their own. :)

Great find. Now you got me excited enough to start searching my world coins again. These are all my Mexico coins. Just discovered a 1905 AG 10 centavos I didn't even know I had!

Nice find. I don't collect varieties like you do but I do collect Mexican coins. I recently lost on an auction for the large variety of the 1918 50 centavos. It's one of only two that I still need.

You never know what might be in your collection, until you take a close look! People find all sorts of cool coins once they know where to look. :D

Thanks...perhaps I saw that same auction? There was a 1918 50c with a different style of reverse (left) that has sans-serif letters/numbers, a different mintmark, and other details. That coin sold for around 8X what I paid--I'm happy to get mine for so little. :D

I never noticed those differences. There are two 1918 50 centavo varieties and one is 3 mm larger than the other. I'd always thought it was impossible to tell the difference from photos since they look the same besides the size. The differences you noticed could be very useful with quality photos.

I wasn't aware of this variety for the year--but now that you mention it, I suspect the coin on the left is the 30mm type. That probably explains why people bid it up over $80.

Yeah, it's listed in Krause. It's almost certainly the one that I bid on. I was the 2nd place bidder but it got too high for me. The reason I could tell the difference on this was that the seller was selling both and he listed the different silver composition for each, so he actually knew what he had. While I don't collect overdates I consider these two different coins so I want to have both.

It sounded like you've been looking for some time. Didn't think you'd part with it. If I collected them, I wouldn't either.
