I STILL am missing a Julius Caesar portrait, although I already have a slightly chipped denarius with the Venus obverse and the captives reverse. And now this worn example that I 'settled' for but would have liked more if it retained at least some of a visible 'CAESAR' legend---and was less heavily circulated. But, I will get a portrait sometime next year and this gives me a chance to see all your J.C's once again. Julius Caesar AR Denarius, Military mint traveling with J.C 49 BC Elephant right, trampling on horner serpent Political implements--simpulum, aspergillum, securis and apex Crawford 443/1; 3,37 grams, 14 mm
Mine is one I settled for as well - it's got flattening on both sides, a rather large test cut(probably done in Spain) as well as some damage that may well have been caused while it was being test cut.
red_stork, Even with all the 'issues' you mention, it has a wonderful amount of detail--unlike mine Wanna trade????
I might as well include my other type---although that 'flan chip' seems larger than I remember LOL J.C Denarius, Venus facing right, Cupid behind, Spain 45-46 BC Trophy with twin Gallic captives seated beneath RSC Julia 11, Sydenham 1014
Mat, I think red-stork and I may be amenable to a trade---although I suspect I'd have to throw in a bucket of cash as well LOL Wonderful example!!!
OK, I'll show you mine, again, but don't call me "show off", I'm very proud of it... ROMAN IMPERATORS, JULIUS CAESAR denarius minted in Italy, c.49 BC CAESAR, elephant walking rigth, trampling on snake No legend, Simpulum, sprinkler, axe and apex 4.05 gr Ref : HCRI # 9, RCV #1399, Cohen #49 Q
i still dont have a JC... nice new coin MZ, the elephants and implements type is great. and dang Q, thats a sweet one!
Q-- that's a mighty jolly-looking elephant! I have two and am reasonably sure they are authentic. These JC denarii are tough to authenticate. There are so many fakes out there and the forgers are quite adept at creating artificial wear. With the more worn examples, it would be very difficult to definitively authenticate using images. One of each elephant type:
Wow gang => those are fantastic JC elephant examples (I'm very jealous of that type) I don't have a JC example either ... but don't worry, chrsmat => we can be coin-losers "together" ...
Those are incredible examples!!!! I sure hope they are genuine, but I'm definitely not the one to make that determination. They sure look real to me......
