hi all, my 1e denarius and its BC. L. Hostilivs Saserna, Rome c. 48. AR Denarius. Head of Gallia r.; Gallic trumpet (carnyx) behind / Diana of Ephesus standing facing, holding spear and stag by its antler. RRC 448/3; RSC Hostilia 4. 18 max 1.96 gr (at 1e strike about 4 gr) sorry for bad picture batteries gone empty 2e pic from web.
You found that while metal detecting? I'm so jealous! I've been wanting a Hostilivs Saserna denarius for a while now (it's a perfect Halloween coin... very creepy). Congratulations!!
Aren't we all? I would love to see a better image when you get the chance. I can't tell if the carnyx is visible on your coin.
Sweet find, Oki (congrats) Gallia looks so sad ... very cool (not that I like sad, but it is quite artsy!!) Oh, and don't even get me started on the cool stag!! (top of the ol' want-list!!) ...... great new addition!!
I don't know that it would be considered rare, but it is definitely less common than many Republican denarii and the type does generally cost more than others.
