Mint QC has gotten really chitty the last few years. I bought an APE back in 2008 and returned it, should have returned the Lincoln set as the cents have spots on them now. What a joke. Too bad they don't have QC like RCM or BRM.

Maybe, but the fact that the set was sold out for months and then all of a sudden appears available for only a few hours on a December day leads me to believe that the mint did indeed make available sets that had been returned for one reason or another.

The mint's selling the rejects? I never bought one when they came out. I MIGHT buy the half dollar version, but I doubt it.

I agree and I think it is the general consensus. I purchased one when they went "back on sale" in December.

Mine also had a defect. I know of nobody who got one on the second sale that didn't find this to be the case, but we kept them anyway.

That we did Mike, but I was lucky enough to get in on the first round. Mine were flawless. I knew what was to come with second offering (coming?) and fully expected the results.......I knew these were returns, but I didn't care. So tempting to turn one into a pocket piece. :)

I would imagine a lot of them were returns, but the mint does hold back some of the production in case of returns and some of the late offering could have been those held back items. But a held back item could also have a defect, so a defect in the later sale item is not proof that it was a returned item.

I recommend a simple solution... On any item returned to the mint. Put a small note in the booklet (hidden)
    1. Why you returned the item
    2. Ask to post a message to cointalk
    3. Include your handle

.. For the Pucks I would put the note under the black holder.

The next big Mint Gimmick is the "Limited Edition Sets". These in my opinion are a collection of returns put into a fancy boxes at year end.
