5 new Republicans from the show

A dealer at the coins show Friday had a better than average supply of Republicans in what I would call very ordinary grade. I ended up buying a bag with the three worst he had and two others that were better but hardly major auction material. The were types I did not have and none were 'just' Roma/chariots. I'll show them in order of increasing grade but not necessarily increasing interest. I invite you to show your nicer ones which I recall having seen before.
T, Carisius c. 46 BC Sibyl/Sphinx - This is one I really wanted in better shape but this moneyer is famous for poor metal and I have seen worse.

L.Papius 79 BC Juno/Gryphon with minor types of lock and key
I know you have many of these including several with really special devices but this is the one that was in the bag.

    L. Titurius LF Sabinus 89 BC Sabine king Tatius/biga minor type branch
This is the ordinary issue of the moneyer that brought you the Rape of the Sabines and Tarpeia and the Shields. There are many variations in the reverse exergue. The British museum site shows a hundred including one like mine in better condition in every way except mine has a much more clear branch. Whoopee?

    M. Plaetorius 67 BC Vacuna/eagle
This one is your fault since several of you have shown nice ones of this type. Mine is poorly centered on the reverse losing the AEDCVR which I really would have liked to have but it does have a pleasant obverse.
    0fdrrplae.jpg
    A. Licinius Nerva 47 BC Fides/horseman dragging captive
The problem with this one is that the victim on the reverse wears away merging into the horse with any more wear than I have here. He is weakly indicated here but this is a coin you need in EF+ to see clearly. I like the way III VIR was split around the horse. Please show me your nicer ones of these.

Again I made the choice of buying 5 junkers for the price of one nice Republican denarius. Actually I did not see a really nice RR denarius at the show that was not a Roman/chariot type and they are not on my short list...yet anyway.

Doug, the obverse on that Plaetorius is very nice indeed. All of these republican denarii make me want to buy a few.

Red. I knew this. I was informed some time ago, but, being old, I forgot. I need to rectify my catalog. Thanks.

As fair warning to new folks here: Many of us try to entice others into our addictions. Republicans are not the only ones.

I do not have the L.PAPI shown below, but would like to have this one.

I bought a Roman plumb bob in a auction last year. Shortly after that purchase, I saw the coin above. My plumb bob did not look like the ones above.

I found six RR denarii with plumb bobs.
The control mark on the L.PAPI reverse is a level. I have a weight that looks like that.

I find all the types shown interesting, but particularly like the 1st, 2nd, and 5th. I'm awaiting the arrival of an L Papius I won recently and a Sibyl and Sphinx is high on my want list.

Here's my version of the 'Sybil/Sphinx'....I thought I had others, but some are still pending or I already bid on and lost some time earlier---Dammit, it's getting easier and easier to confuse me LOL

Well, CNG just closed and I had to let a few go to others more intent on owning them than me...but I did win a 'worn' type, but not of those posted by Doug-----a differing RR denarius than my others depicting an Equestrian horse reverse with an Ancus Marcus obverse .

By the way, CONGRATS 'Al' on your JA purchase!!!!

Well apart from my JC elephant, and a bronze semis, I only have this one. It is not well centred, but it was OK for the price. I am a bit wary of RRs, I just don't know enough about them.

I also snagged the Clodianus Quinarius too, because between @ancientcoinguru and me, we looked to have most of the RR Quinarii issues... So, I could not resist to try to get them all into my bevy. She inspired me with her Clodianus... :)

You know, maybe I should ask her to hand deliver my coins. I only live a few miles from CNG. Think there's a chance?
